Hi,

Several months ago, I got accepted into one of Cuny's 13 doctoral subprograms in psychology. The program I got into is research oriented and does not lead to a license to practise as a psychologist. I applied to this specific program because of my mentor who is associated with this program. I am also in the process of completing my 3000 hours to be fully licensed as a mental health counselor. I wanted the additional degree to open more teaching and research opportunities but first and foremost, I consider myself a clinician.

It was recently notified that CUNY/ Graduate Center is having a major restructuring of its doctoral programs in pyschology and that as a result, current and incoming students have the option of either staying in the subprograms into which they were accepted or switching into one of the newer training areas. Details on what the process of crossing over would entail were not included, and I am trying to find out more information.

My question to all of you : If I can get into one of CUNY's clinical programs ( they have 3), would it make sense for me to do so, in order to get a psychologist license? The program I got into requires only 60 credits while the clinical programs entail 90 credits. I would have to apply to internships all over again, after I had already done all that and am already working in the field. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your input,

PS My mentor is awesome and is supportive if I switch to another subprogram. She / He would still be my mentor, although I may have additional one/s at the new subprogram.
