I am an Animal Science grad with a 3.17 GPA, returned Peace Corps Volunteer, and am taking the GRE this week - where I assume I will do average, if not above average. I'm applying to 5 schools (4 Midwest, and SGU). My lower GPA was mostly due to a Public Service minor where I took a lot of ridiculous PolSci classes that I hated. Other than that, my difficult science classes were generally B+/A- range

As someone with A LOT of varied experience, solid eLORs, and an emphasis on research and public health vet med... What do you think my chances are of getting into veterinary school?

In the Peace Corps I've worked for the United Nations FAO as an extensionist... going around with a FAO veterinarian teaching vax and deworming to local villages. I also set up an entire milk processing system for a homeless shelter. I can speak 2 non-native languages fluently (Spanish and Tagalog)

In undergrad, had some fairly impressive internships with animal health companies...

I just would like to stir up some opinions. My boss told me she got in with a 3.15, but I know it's sometimes the luck of the year and school applied to (she was a contract student from a state with no vet school)

Thoughts?!

Extremely likely you will get into SGU and a possibility for US schools depending on where you actually applied. Rock the gre to show your low overall gpa was an outlier. Assuming you have great vet experiences.

Thanks for the quick response!

Applying to Iowa State (in state)

Then Minnesota, Illinois, Penn, I think...

I assume my best luck will be at Iowa State an SGU. My top choice is Iowa State. I'm a little weary of SGU... any thoughts on that??

This. 👍

Statistically, your chances at your IS school are a little bit better, but don't rely on it. More than anything, you'll need to rock the GRE. If your score this time around isn't as high as you want, then you might want to consider retaking it but with studying like from a prep book or online course. And like snowyrox stated, this is assuming you have pretty solid vet and animal experience. As far as SGU goes, I'm not too familiar with their process or program so I'm not the best person to give you advice there.

Take a look at the 2016 stat thread (link below). You'll see that there are a lot of people who got into vet school with less than perfect GPAs. It's possible. You just have to be strong everywhere else on your app.

Good luck! :luck:

Weary of SGU? You mean wary? Why?

You'd be a competitive candidate at MN. You may want to sneak in some traditional veterinary experience, though, in addition to the cool Peace Corp and research stuff.

Wary because of the final year transfer mostly...

Does anyone know someone who has gone through it? Do you feel like you are accepted into the 4th year class wherever you end up? Also worried about the cost of living..

And, yes, meant *wary... and will be sure to include my traditional experience along with Peace CorpS* 😉

Sorry, I'm new and didn't see the "What are my chances" thread. But hey, even though I didn't follow the rules I still got some helpful responses... thanks everyone!
