wanted to get some advice from BU prostars...any info you could provide would be great...

starting BU in a month... just wondering if u could give some advice about class prep... what would u bring to class everyday? your laptop/notebooks/binders? is it like undergrad where u have a clipboard with blank paper and jot down notes... am pretty much completely clueless about how the classes run....

can you describe the classes themselves? boring/long/difficult to understand?

any hints on how to do well .. i.e getting on well with profs/cramming/study notes?

thx in advance

Hey i start at BU this fall too, it would be great if ANY BU students would give some advice. Thanks

Hey I am starting on Aug too can someone please answer.. by the way nice meating you all, we will see eachother in class I suppose.... 🙂

Hello All,
I will also be enrolling at BUGSDM this Fall, and will be looking forward to meeting all of you. I did my undergraduate requirements in Florida, and therefore clueless about Boston. Can any of you provide some suggestions about where to live and how much I can expect it to cost.
Thanks

PS whats the name of the immediate neighborhood that the medical campus is located?

i'm in Boston as i write...came down for the weekend to check out my apartment... first time in the city so i'll give it my best shot to answer ur q's..

lets see..

the school of dentistry is in a region of boston called the SOUTH END... so when ur searching on craigslist or bostonapartments... that would be a good keyword to use... school of dents is right where harrison meets east newton more or less...

areas that'll get u a less than 15 minute walking time: areas around mass ave, harrison, east springfield, concord.... and prob more... didn't get to explore more areas...

cost... well its boston..so gotta be prepared for big bucks.. i did a back flip when i saw my rent was only 625/mo (sharing a 2 bdroom at 1250$).... truth is when i did searches online i couldn't find anything less than $750/mo/per person for a 2 bedroom...and most were $900/person.... you might be able to find a decent Studio for yourself... the only issue with that is you can't divide the cost for other things like internet/phone/cable tv/etc etc with another person..and all that stuff can run really high... but heck if ur spending that much on tuition perhaps that much more really won't bother u...

when ur searching for places..try to look at 'no fee apts'... that'll save some extra bucks on the realtor's fee...

also...making a trip down is prob the best idea... i gave my roommate a lead for a realtor and as they met the realtor got a new listing on the spot...which turned out to be the apt i'm sitting in...

other than that... the area around BU... GOOOOOOOOOOD LOOOOOOOOOOORD.... no joke..its the ghetto... in 10 minutes we saw the strangest people we'd ever seen...half naked dudes dragging sinks in the middle of the road..people walking by muttering to themselves... tons of people asking for money...was nuts...real eye opener... and scared the living hell out of me... similar to some parts of downtown Toronto i guess... but def more weird... the campus itself looked pretty nice..

annnnyways...hope that helped a little...

i'm sure the BU pro's can add more.. where are u guys???

Hey I am from Toronto and I agree lol, the area is not that pretty, specialy walking in the park behind the medical school. first time I drove there, and I pulled into a parking and while I was putting quarters into the parkmeter, a wierd lookin guy walked up to me and said something in spanish, I didn't know what the hell he was saying...lol...than he said ( YOU SPEAK SPANIOL)I said no, than he said, I have a proposition for you, I was puzzled, than he said gime 3dallaars and puta thata machine outa order for ya so you can park all damn day..... any how but the school is very nice.. goodluck,,,

wow. where are the BU pros at? it seems just us first years are replying. i'm in the EXCEL program as i write and here's the break down of what other students have said.

rent: south end is nice the first year, but by year 2 happens you'll move. Quincy is cheap (1brs 700-900; 2br 1000-1300) and the commute is 20 mins. i got a place in JP which is awesome (berkeley-esque). for florida and calif people, i hear that free heat and hot water is important during the winters. get on the list for housing with the graduate housing office. it'll give you a good idea.

south end area: it's a ghetto, but not bad. students are walking around all the time and the neighbor is changing for the better. i hear to stay away from roxbury crossing.

dvd/texts: other students are mixed. the concensus seems to be dvd. pluses are you got in bag with all your stuff, you don't use text references that much. profs give handouts and online material which majority of will be on exams. i'm going with dvds, but the EXCEL class is half and half.

notes: well do what works for you. students say it'll vary btw students.

class expectations: did you get a schedule from admissions? it's brutal. the first two years sucks. alot of lectures and alot of studying out of books. but the third and last years are lab and clinical, which are hella of alot more fun. so work your ass off the first two years and try to polish hand skills your 3rd and last years.

again, i'm a new student too and probably the last person who should comment about BU. this is what i hear from other years.
