I was wondering how common it is for students to be taken off the hold list during the year? Or or a few select few relegated to the waitlist in April? Percentage to come off the waitlist? I have done a search on this topic but have not found any definitive answers.

I interviewed at both Case and the new Cleveland Clinic school and was very impressed with both schools.

I am currently on hold at Case, any suggestions on how to turn that into an acceptance? 😉

If you prefer feel free to PM me...

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Last year, zero students were accepted off the hold list/waiting list at Case Western Reserve University. Supposedly, that's because a significant number of the previous first year's class were forced to remediate the first year, and left it oversubscribed. Typically, there's a highly variable amount of movement; the dean, Dr. Kirby, is a really nice guy, and will certainly answer any questions you have about the status of your application candidly.

Thanks Guys

I really appreciate your insights. 🙂 Hopefully the trend will be different this year 🙄

wow...a bunch of case students failed?

Ouch!
*scratches dream of Case Western off list*

😀

I'm also on hold.

I got in off of the waitlist two years ago. I think up to 20 people were pulled off it for the class of 2006. Don't worry at this point about being on it, do your other interviews and just sit back and wait. They told us when we were interviewing that if you got a hold at CWRU that most students would also be accepted somewhere else.

Good luck

Academic misconduct, resulting in a group of students being given a failing grade for an exam late in the year.

Where did you come up with that?! What misconduct are we talking here? This is news to me really.

The story, as told by one of the current MS-III, is that one of the professors suspected a large body of students of cheating on one of his exams. The administration confronted the students in question, retested them - and a goodly number failed it. Those students are now repeating their MS-I, and the reason no waitlist movement occurred.

im very surprised by that, and potentially damaging obviously. i just wonder how they would cheat? maybe miamidoc can help me out.

weird.... i didn't hear of anythign when i interviewed last year. strange that u're from class of 2006 and according to xaelia, the gulty parties were from your class year. are u seeing any classmates where are missing this year...ie. ur class unexpectedly got smaller? i remember case uses laptops for exms. maybe that's the source....dunno.

the class is definitely smaller but thats not the reason i heard.

There has been no talk about cheating here at the school. We would definantly know if something like that happened because of the rumor mill here. I think we lost 12 people from the class of 2006 to the class of 2007, but some of those were for non academic reasons. Of the people who failed the year I have spoken to them and they talk about failing 3+ exams and then the final. If they had passed the final then they would have gone to second year.

I hate when people try to talk about things through rumors!!!!!

rumor is resident alien likes to use a paddel in cricket

Don't think this would be possible. I'm an MS-I and all the exam questions are kept very secure and there's no hard copy (exam is online). Also, there isn't really an advanced copy because the questions are pulled from their large question database a few days before the test...

Can't remember which model Dell they issued and i'm too lazy to check right now. Also, the exam program is supposed to prevent you from multitasking...

This is all very interesting. A few comments:

I would not have expected that administering a retest would be a very good way to diagnose cheating. How many people let information fall right out of thier noodle after a test. I'm betting plenty, particularly when the next set of material is trying to jam its way in.

Secondly, even if retention is good (could be, who knows), surely the retest would consist of different questions, no? I had an embryo exam today in the case med school and while I think I did well, a different set of questions (particularly those pertaining to the face and neck, for instance) would have produced from me a totally different result. It is my impression that MSI's and 2's do not have great retention and therefore the 8 weeks of Step 1 study time comes in very handy, no?

Third, how is it possible that only 20 people came off the waitlist the year before last. That would puts Case's yeald at something like 90% - twice as high as what is typical. Our interview material said that Case made about 250 offers for 120 spots (or so--I'm blury here). Wouldn't 130 of those spots need to come off the waitlist? Otherwise, the school would have to churn something like 110 spots all before may 15 (that is, make 110 offers, all of which are declined for may15). Possible, I suppose. I'm curious.

I believe Case's yield is typically ~35%, in the range of most private medical schools. Therefore, they send out ~400 offers for their class of 145. That ~400 would include offers to the waiting list, meaning, pulling 20 off the waiting list would probably entail sending out ~370 acceptances originally, and then perhaps another ~30 to folks waiting to fill the class when only 125 of the original ~370 hold their places.
