Hello all,

I'm going to give my stats and future ambitions for the upcoming cycle. A little bit of backbone info: I just decided to start applying myself to dentistry (last March, my senior year and college), so my application this cycle was a little thrown together.

I graduated in May 2016 with a B.S. in Biology. I currently have a pretty good gig working as a sterilization tech at a local periodontist office (started almost immediately after graduating). Whenever I'm not sterilizing instruments, I'm shadowing whatever surgery is going on (this translates to roughly 2-4 hours of shadowing per day). That being said, the doctors there have allowed me to expand my role, working with patient communication via post-op appointments and working with growth factors used in surgeries, to name a few. Recently, they've had me start shadowing at other places (starting with GD's), to see a little bit of everything and to network a little.

That being said, here are my other stats. By the next cycle they should be:

GPA: 3.51
Science GPA: 3.40
DAT: 17 AA and TS (taking it in late April, early May to boost it up)
Volunteer Hours: 153 (spending every Friday at a homeless shelter, racking up around 7 hours per week, as well as participating in local dental clinics)
Volunteer Hours: 100+ (including my job shadowing and shadowing other dentists)

I know the DAT is what's dragging me down the most, but I want to ensure that my other stats and experiences are at least in a ballpark range of decent, or on the right track.

Thanks,
CC

Your GPA is good (average gpa at my school is 3.6) and as long as you get a good DAT (21 AA/TS is average at my school), you should be fine.

Your GPA is on the higher spectrum of the average scale, so that part is fine. But you need atleast a 20 to be relatively more competitive. As mentioned above, try to get a 21+ and definitely continue to rack up the extracurriculars.

Everything seems good. Retake DAT, destroy it, and you'll be good for multiple interviews.

Retake the DAT and aim high. Anything in the 19-21AA range will land you something as long as you apply early. Aim to apply the first two weeks of June. This means you should hit submit to AADSAS by mid-June with your personal statement polished and completed.
