I've been told that it is critical to keep up on current medical events for interview purposes.

Those of you who have interviewed -how much are you quizzed on medical current events? ie the new self-contained artificial heart, or anthrax.

you will most likely get a current event question or two at each interview. Good news is they are mostly ethicly related, meaning you need to think about the social issues(think who is getting the short end of the stick and why) not the details. And sometimes they just ask "what do you think about ____" So you can control the flow with what you know.

In the 6 interviews i had, the only real question like this was about anthrax-- what i would tell a patient worried about it. Others were about how i think i would handle a medical situation- ie. what i would do in the er if i had to triage a patient i new was going to die, and they asked why i hadn't sent them to the doc yet. Maybe i was just lucky though- i'd keep up on some common issues and have one or two that you could talk about in some depth/detail just in case. Good luck!

i forgot to tell you to-- look at interviewfeedback.com, you can get some good ideas/prep questions there

I would have to agree with JHUG. In the five interviews I had, I was asked an ethical question (abortion, physician-assisted suicide, etc.) at nearly every school. In fact, UHS-in Kansas City allowed me to pick an ethical issue in medicine and discuss it. Your opinion isn't as important as being informed and being able to defend your opinion (they just want to see if you can articulate your answers ). Prepare yourself for current topics and ethical issues is my best advice. GOOD LUCK!!
