CV - how to list something that has not been published yet?

I am second author on a chapter in a textbook. We just submitted the chapter to the editor, and it won't actually be published until probably the fall. But I need to have my updated CV soon to apply for an elective, and I'd like to have this on it.

The doc I wrote it with is tough to get ahold of, unless he's giving a lecture, so I thought I'd seek out other sources, i.e., this website.

How would I list something like this on the CV? Thanks!

That's how I have my abstract/publications written on my CV before they were accepted/published. The "chapter submitted/ in pres" you probably oculd write anything there..basically you just want to say that it's been submitted, accepted, in press,, being considered, ect.

Make sure its been accepted though. If all you have is a submission to a journal, i wouldn't list it at all.

nah, i disagree....maybe that was the case for med school applications but for your CV you should probably list it and let the person reviewing your CV judge it however they'd like. As long as you make it obvious that it has not yet been accepted it should be all good. In my case I put in an additional "Manuscripts Under Review" section and listed it with "[Status: Submitted to JournalName]" at the end of the listing.

That's exactly what I did. I really don't think it's a problem unless you aren't honest about the article being still under consideration. Just the fact that you managed to write an article and submit it is definitely worth putting on your CV.

True...and the process is first controlled by your PI who is probably making the ultimate decision of where you submit the paper and whether it is good enough to be submitted

Seems like people are missing the point, this is a textbook chapter not a journal article. Chapters in textbooks are generally requested and are not going to be rejected like a paper. Also, the PI will not be making a decision of where to submit because it's obviously going into the textbook. I wrote two chapters in my old lab and both were what you would consider "provisionally accepted" at the time they asked us to write them.
