Hi all!

I am a first year doctoral student in the process of making my first CV (I've always used a resume). I have a question that I hope you can help me answer.

I know you are generally supposed to include your supervisor's name when listing your previous employment. However, I really don't want to do this with one of my former jobs. My supervisor was absolutely horrible. I spoke up and testified against how she/the company were abusing clients as well as committing medicaid fraud. She ended up getting convicted and if you google her name, she is now on probation(not sure the formal wording-but basically if there is another conviction she will lose her license to practice) with the LCSW board. I had no other supervisors at this site and I know if I listed the company's owner, they would speak very ill of me for reporting them.

In addition, my supervisor (an LCSW) for my internship during my MA program has also lost her license to practice. This was a direct result of me and other employees reporting the abuse she inflicted on clients and employees. There is no one else at this site who I can list as a supervisor.

Clearly, I don;t want to leave off two places of employment on my CV as it would leave a lot of gaps in time. Also, as I am relatively new in the field, these 2 years make up a significant portion of my experience.

I spoke to my adviser, but she is a recent grad and suggested that I ask veterans in the field for advice (she is also doing this for me).

It would not be an issue to list my supervisors from other employment besides these two sites. So, what should I do? Should I avoid listing any supervisors on my CV to keep the format correct? Should I just exclude supervisors on those two sites?

Help!

I'd be interested in what others say, but I'd simply list places of employment/practica with no supervisor.

When I see others' cvs, seeing a name on there is more "oh hey I know them, great!" than "oh hey a reference to call".

Yeah, I would just not put any supervisors and just list where you worked. As you continue on in your program, you'll be relying on these older aspects less and less, and I don't think anyone would be upset to see it without a supervisor listed. If they for some reason wanted a reference from that particular place, they can always ask you and then you can explain the situation. But I would say leave off all supervisors instead of just leaving off some (that would look weirder). Good luck OP!
