Hello,
I applied at CVS pharmacy tech, because my advisor said I need experience and that would be great opportunity. Basically, I have no experience in pharmacy and I don't have any certification or license. Do I have a shot at being a pharmacy tech?

Depending on which state you live in, you might be hired on as a pharmacy cashier/clerk or tech trainee because you don't have a license or certification. Though you don't have any experience, many stores would be willing to train you if you show an interest in learning and if they have the availability.

CVS will hire anyone who can pass the drug test.

like matchagreentea stated, it really depends where you live because certain states have laws and policies. In Texas, CVS will hire people with a technician or a trainee license because they train both types the same way. In other locations such as Walgreens or Walmart, do not. I would recommend calling the pharmacy ( cvs locations you wish to work at) and speak to the pharmacy manager. Let them know you want to apply to pharmacy school and ask them what they recommend you doing ( like "should I apply trainee or technician license" or "are you currently hiring ..") . This way they you they get to know you on a name to name basis, especially if they are looking for people to hire.

Yes, it really depends on where you are. I work in Oklahoma and you don't need to be a tech to apply for either hospital or retail pharm tech positions anywhere. Then most of the time they just make you take the little pharmacy tech test and then you can apply for a license. At least that's how it is here.

You arent required to be initially certified or licensed when first entering the job [at cvs]. Theyll help you in that route, especially if theyre understaffed and need the hands and hours. CVS will first hire you as a front store clerk, to observe your customer service skills, teach you the register, and how to interact with customers, and after a week or so if you show/express interest in the pharmacy they will have you start their online and in-class training courses. you wont be able to step foot in the pharmacy until you complete the hippa course. Theyll then transfer you to the pharmacy and train you themselves - then youll be a tech. After 6-9 months of working with them you will be required to take the state exam and pass in order to continue as a certified technician. ( you can also take the PTCB but arent required to. They wont increase your pay either way. but itll give you more job options for the future)

So, yes. you definitely have a shot.

I applied for a tech position earlier this year and received a call from 3 different CVS locations with 1-2 months later. I had never stepped foot in a pharmacy before. Once I got a technician candidate license, they hired me. Depending on what your state requires to start working in a pharmacy, that's what the CVS locations in your state will be looking for...for legal reasons. In most states, you have to have some kind of license to actually work in the pharmacy. In my state it was a simple process to get the license, though it took 6 weeks because they take a while with the state background check. So yes, the will hire you with no experience.
