I decided on EM late and did no aways (but admittedly had great scores) - got every interview I wanted and matched at a great program.

On the serious side, I am wondering about the answer to this question as well. How detrimental would not having an away to my application since I didn't know I wanted to do EM until last month. I will have 1 SLOE from my home program. Assuming I have competitive scores(high 230s Step 1 and 240s Step 2), and good clinical grades(mostly honors), will I have significant trouble getting interviews?
Not having an away won't hurt as much, as your numbers are pretty good... but most places do want a 2nd SLOE.
If you can, try to get anything open & away -OR- am EM-oriented elective like US or Tox... some Tox rotations won't do SLOE, but some will so ask.
