Good morning all,

So I decided to take OChem 2 over the summer to try and get it out of the way. Long story short, a lot of things happened personally in the timeframe of this course (friend passing away, another friend getting diagnosed with cancer) and I just got my grade back for my last exam in that class and basically I have a D for the class. The only way to get that up to a C would be with a near perfect final which I plan on taking. My next semester (first semester of junior year) I plan on taking genetics, physics, and cell & molecular biology, as well as a couple non-science courses. Obviously with a D I have to retake this class right? For reference, my cGPA after this D will be a 3.42 and sGPA 3.08. I obviously plan on having a much better semester in the fall, but I was just looking for any guidance/words of advice you guys would have about my situation. I should retake this class this upcoming semester correct? Would getting a B be sufficient? I know grade replacement is no longer a thing, so how much does this one D hurt me?

Don't add it to that already tough schedule! Take it again in spring term and a B would be great.

Most schools have Orgo II as a prereq and require a C or better. If you get a D, retake the class. I don't think DO schools scrutinize individual grades like some MD schools do. Just work on getting your sGPA up and you'll have a nice upward trend to go with your higher sGPA.

Speaking from experience here: My orgo 1 class, more than 75% dropped/failed. I took a final with only 5 other people and was not sitting very well average wise. What I did was go talk the professor (not that it helped or mattered) because that's my personal approach. Busted my butt on the final and scathed away with a C. Grateful for it honestly.

Buckle down, do whatever you can for that C. Forget about that class and move on.

Worst case scenario with a D. Triage and retake, preferably with a lighter load. Don't risk setting yourself up for only a slightly better grade in a very time consuming semester.

Can you drop a science course and retake O Chem II in this fall? You don't want to forget the O Chem you went over this past summer.

Your schedule is kind of packed too. You need to get A's man. Bears1992 is right that you need to raise that science GPA up.

I did the same thing lol. I was so elated when I saw that C but that was years ago.

One D won't kill you, but some schools may require a higher grade in a pre-req course like this.

I recommend retaking IF you haven't taken the MCAT yet, since I fear you have a poor grasp of the matetrial.

I know this may be a bit off topic but do schools like As in orgo or is that just treated like any other A? Thanks

three of my buddies from orgo 1 and 2 got Ds in at least one of the two classes, and all three are just starting their MS 2 year.

It's definitely not the end of the world! You have a great opportunity to finish strong and that would do huge things for your app. Sounds like you're approaching this last year with a good attitude too.

Upper division science classes are looked at more favorably. I'm not sure orgo 2 counts as "upper division" but it certainly is known to be difficult and I think a high grade in that bodes well.

But I'm certain that As in biochem, genetics, neurobiology definitely have weight with adcoms.

If you decide to retake it (and you probably should), you want to make sure that you get an A because your D won't be replaced by the new grade since AACOMAS got rid of grade replacement policy. The D will still get factored into your GPA calculation, so you want to get an A to do damage control.
