This past quarter I was given a D in the third quarter of Calculus-based physics (Electricity and Magnetism). I got A's in the first 2 quarters, but now a D this quarter.

There are a number of reasons why I got this grade, but it was mainly due to being burnt out and being a very unhappy person this quarter. I suffered from "transferitis," as I currently now go to a Top 100 school but was accepted for transfer at a Top 25. Needless to say, I am most likely going to get rescinded from the school of my dreams and be relegated to another 2 more unhappy years here.

I have a total of about 98 units done with 82 or so units before college is done (I am on quarter system). Before this mistake my cumulative GPA was at a 3.84 and my science gpa was at a 3.80. My lowest grade in college was an A-. This quarter, I received 2 A-'s and 1 D which puts me at a 2.76 for the quarter. Not sure how much lower my cumulative is.

1) Is med school over? I have learned from my mistakes, and plan to spend most of my remaining college career in isolation studying to get straight A's to make up for this.

2) How do I go about explaining this D in physics assuming I can even get an interview? Nobody died in my family, no major medical condition arose ... I just simply was unhappy at my college, which in turn affected my performance. I was counting the days until I could transfer to my dream school which the dream is now shattered into little tiny pieces. I know this isn't a good excuse, but how should I explain it?

What year are you? If you are a sophomore, there is still some time to bring your gpa back up. I think as long as you can rebound and show a upward swing, the adcoms will know you are serious and that the D was just a small hiccup. Everyone makes mistakes, its depends how people respond to them that determines what happens next.

Anyway you would like to...Considering that you have a pretty good past record, you can come up with any excuse and you should be fine. It doesn't have to be an extreme like medical conditions or death in the family. A lot of personal issues can impact your grades, even if they don't require you seeking any sort of medical attention. Just think of it like explaining a W. No one knows the real reason for the grade nor is their evidence for the reason. And since this is your first lowest grade, they don't have anything to compare it to, it is not a grade that you have a history of getting.

Feeling depressed, unfocused, personal issues, stress, etc. anything other than "I got that grade because I was lazy" should be a legit excuse.

Don't exaggerate, obviously, but don't be too honest either, unless you have legible reason to be so.

Broken record. This thread reappears daily. Yes, become a mailman!

There has only ever been one successful Mailman that earned a D in Physics. And even he couldn't deliver on Sundays.

Does anyone have advice on how to not feel like a complete worthless piece of s***? It's Sort of what this D has done to my self image and has completely shattered my ego into millions of tiny pieces

Your GPA is fine. Retake and move on. Do NOT go into isolation.

Call your xfer school. Tell them you had a bad time of it in physics this term, that you had trouble with xyz concepts, that your personal issues unfortunately interfered with your performance, issues have been resolved, it's obviously a fluke, you know you need to remediate, and you want to get tutoring/support/whatever set up ahead of time to ensure that you are able to succeed at the new school.

Go in there like a boss, not like some sniveling little pansy.

You accept it and move on.

After sending numerous e-mails to the teacher, begging and pleading for him to pass me, he graciously bumped it up to a C. Turns out the school I'm transferring to (UCLA) is his alma mater, and he had a great deal of sympathy for my situation. And my organic teacher bumped me to a solid A in the class for attending all office hours (90% or so) and performing exceptionally well on the final in comparison to the midterms ..... so 1 A, 1 A- and 1 C ...F**** YESSSS :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

GPA for the quarter: 3.200 (Pitiful, but I'LL TAKE IT )
Cumulative GPA: 3.71
And I'm now going to the University of California at Los Angeles

Moral of story: NEVER give up and throw in the towel. EVER.

Good, you just learned the power of sucking up. Many elite sdn will try to claim that you should just give up and take the grade you actually earned....disregard morality, acquire good grades.

Different strokes for different folks - I would not beg(ask) for a grade that I didn't earn (nothing against you OP).
