I'm just trying to figure out which programs to spend my elective time at during 4th year. Scutwork.com doesn't offer much help. Specifically, does anyone know much about Palmetto in SC or Birmingham, AL programs. Any other suggestions or advice on programs to check out would be great!!
As a D.O. student, I'm also interested in programs that have more of a track record of taking D.O.s into their programs or at least being more receptive to D.O. students (some are still not that receptive). I have been shining well in all my rotations thus far but my board scores are somewhere in the top of the bell curve (not that impressive) so I'm just trying to be realistic about which programs to apply to. Thanks for any help!

Im a DO, and Ive interviewed at both of those places.

Birmingham was nice, is about to have nice new ED, just got new PD who Ive heard good things about. Friendly residents, new program, probably still ironing kinks out but on the whole I would definitely be happy to match there. Lots of academic potential, which is really why I like them. A really good place though.

Palmetto is super fresh, great PD, great residents. Great benefits. More clinical. Their residents are among the happiest Ive talked to, and so much of that boils down to their PD, who is the best Ive met (and Ive actually liked all of them). Great location, too, if you like that part of the country.

I was really impressed in Jackson, MS of all places on my southern tour. they are quite DO friendly and have a neat program. Another 2,3,4 like Birmingham. Again, academically inclined so really it depends on what you want. There are lots of people on here who totally shun the 2,3,4 -and I actually almost canceled both of mine, but I am glad I kept em both because Im gonna end up ranking them high.

If I were you, though, Id rotate at palmetto.

In the Southeast, I applied to and got interviews at USF, UF, and MCG. I didn't really apply much in the Southeast. Orlando is notoriously un DO friendly. I did NOT apply to them, so I cannot say it is from personal experience, just the rumor mill.

I interviewed at Palmetto and liked it a lot. I agree with most of what kung-fu said about it. The area was really nice as well with a big lake and lots of outdoor stuff to do while being in a decent sized town. IIRC the ED was pretty nice too.

Ok, lets see:

Emory - did a rotation there. Very busy, very strong EM program with lots of $ for research. Typical county feel at Grady / poor ancillary staff support. A good letter from here would be golden in the southeast, esp. if from the chair or PD. PD is an extremely intellegent guy who looks like Kevin Spacey, the chairman a nationally recogized leader in EM. The downside to the rotation is that you spend the month at 5, count them, five different hospitals (Grady/Crawford Long/Emory/Egleston/Hugh Spalding = 3 Adult +2 Ped EDs). It's also notoriously difficult to get an 'A.'

Carolina's Medical Center (UNC Charlotte) - again, did a rotation here. Program very strong, more of a community feel - but still large patient #s and academic strength. Great ancillary staff support. Overall an amazing program, very happy down to earth residents, young PD with great vision. Again, a letter from here would be great if from the right attending. A word of caution: the clerkship director automatically writes you a SLOR. Do not make this your only letter from here. Also, the residency program is so competitive that you should not expect to have preference to get an interview if you rotate there. I wish I had known this before my month there.

UAB - wow, I was really impressed by this program. Young, energetic program with a few kinks to work out still, as mentioned before. I see this as a positive, though - the residents get to take an active role in the development of the curriculum. Was originally not excited about interviewing at 2/3/4 programs, but UAB will likely be #1 on my ROL now. Residents very happy, great ancillary staff support, new ED to open in July 04. The best part: this program is going nowhere but up. Almost every other residency at Birmingham is top notch, and the EM program will follow suit. 🙂 The new PD was on faculty at Denver for 10 yrs, then at Portland as head of EMS for a couple. He has great vision, sees UAB as a top tier program in a few years. Lots of faculty research.

My advice: do a rotation a well known, established EM program Emory/CMC/LSU New Orleans. Apply to rotate early (now). Get letters from well known faculty (ask your mentor, do a pubMED search by author) that you had shifts with. At the beggining of the month arrange your schedule to work with that faculty member at least twice. Finally, apply widely. Whats $800 vs $100k in loans?

For people who have done electives at Palmetto, USF, and Jacksonville: any word on housing available for students and any other advice on rotations at these places?

BustinB,

MCG in Augusta has at least 6 DOs, one of which is chief. Likewise for ECU in Greenville, NC. Both good programs in smaller cities.

USF you can contact the residency coordinator and she'll get you in contact with the GME office at USF, they might have student housing available. You can rent a place at my parents house if ya want.

Palmetto has free housing located right next to the hospital (walking distance). Free cable, W/D, sparse kitchen facilities. Its not much but the price is right.

Whats wrong Booty? The MI isn't giving you the love or you've just had enough of that crazy cold weather. Anyway, from what I've so far experienced, most of the places I want to do an elective at are on a fisrt come-first served basis so make sure you get your apps out as soon as they start accepting them for the Sub-I. Also some places have other EM rotations like in Peds or Psych. So that would be another good way to check out a program. Good luck and stay warm.

Yeah I'm tired of freezing my butt off in MI. Probably not as cold here as it is in Jersey though. And you thought Kirksville was cold?
Anyway, Psych EM rotation? Never heard of it. But I would never doubt the FlemishGiant.
