-2007, AMA.org

found that in another thread

boy must be confuddled! i looked on the AMA website and couldnt find anything...then the AOA and couldnt find anything... silly DO, feet are for Pods!

my advice to everyone... do not get involved.

yea... all i said was that a DO cant do a PM&S-24/36. little did i know the can of worms that would soon open, my bad. I figured that one of them would say "lol, oops. thanks!". anyway, yea im done as well haha.

i would be jealous if i were them as well... we make more money and can do surgery. haha

you are not surgeons. cutting off a toenail does not count. podiatry is not proven medicine, and you put patients at risk, just like PAs, DCs, DNPs, etc.

Wow, a tad harsh no? Last I checked (as a fourth year podiatry student) I was training to be a foot AND ankle physician and surgeron - maybe something changed during my clerkship months at the OR? Pardon my sarcasm but I couldn't resist. In all seriousness though, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine go through three years of surgical training and rotate through many other medical/surgical specialties during that time. During that time, we are trained in various procedures of the foot and ankle. This also includes in-house management for podiatric cases i.e. post-op patients of complicated procedures i.e. reconstructive ankle fusions, and diabetic foot infections (this includes gas gangrenes). Podiatry is actually based on allopathic philosophy so I'm a tad confused by your "podiatry is not a proven statement" comment.

At any rate, I will not fuel a pissing war of med students because we are all going to be professional colleagues. I recommend that you read up on what we do before posting comments like that. There's a great sticky post at the top of this form called "what is podiatric medicine?" I highly recommend you to read up on that.

To other posters, please be respectful and resourceful in your postings. Good luck with your studies.

Who are you convincing??? You? The rest of the podiatrist in the forum?? A physician (ie DO) has the choice of specializing in something such as surgery, rather than being set into a pseudo specialty since day one of school. Someone like an orthopedic surgeon can completely a full ortho residency, and then a foot and ankle fellowship (if he/she chose) and really do everything plus regular ortho. It seems kind of unprofessional and immature to take an honest mistake that was already pointed out by members of the DO forum and pull it into your own little corner to exaggerate in secrecy. Good luck with everything, hopefully people won't confuse your profession with an area of physician speialization in the future.

midlevels, haha.

Let me double check the math here:

Doctor = midlevel

Podiatrist = scope of practice above the ankle???

Seems to check out. Next time my chest hurts or I break my leg, remind me to skip the cardiologist and emergency medical midlevels and drive straight to the podiatrist.

I just wanted to state for the record that I have nothing against podiatry, and actually stated this in the DO forums. The podiatrist students/attendings who commented on that thread were very professional, and I only became frustrated when I happened to see this topic while scrolling down the forums. I'm really not trying to offend ... simply stop bashing.
