allendo said:Does anyone know which D.O. programs have the linked intern year?
A large majority of them. All of the ones I've looked at do.
The ones in Oklahoma and some in Missouri do (those are the only ones I've investigated.)
Im sure there are a bunch of them. A few in PA and OH that I know of. The director of the one in OH is a UNECOM grad and he gave a lecture here a few weeks ago about the EM residency process. What he said is that a lot of the programs have EM oriented internships that are not OFFICIALLY linked, but that as long as you dont make a complete fool of yourself as an intern they welcome you into the residency as an R2.... But that is just what he said. He told us that many of the programs are like this. Others actually have linked programs.
There are a few others that are indeed linked, but not on this list for some reason

Yeah, Arrowhead has (as of this year) only 2!?!? linked spots (via golden handshake method-no paperwork is signed, ie. do your traditional year w/ us and you have the em spot next year... As long as you don't screw up). As for the other 2 spots, they take them from the other traditional interns (outsiders are offered interviews but its for show). So if you and 5 of your trad intern buddies are going for EM and it doesn't work out (ie don't get the spot) you are SOL!!! Think about it, you did you precious "audition" electives as an intern at ARMC, and not offered a spot so you are forced to scramble around and find something/interview (with what vacation?) and other headache/heartache. The system sucks, and it is not unique to the Arrowhead EM residency. Or other AOA residencies in general (see ortho). But if you really want it... Go for it!
Good luck,

ok guys I've heard that some of the DO programs will tell you flat out that they want you during/after your interview, basically that they want you to commit to them. i think i've seen it mentioned here before, but search is down.
and so there i was in my third interview, at a program and the PD says he wants me there. what do you do? It is one of the better DO em progs, but I also want to interview a couple of other places. It gave me warm fuzzies to feel wanted and know that I have a spot, but i'm a girl that doesn't like to feel pressured or feel that i have to commit. what did those of u b4 me tell the PD?

Well if you want to go there, GET IT IN WRITING!!! That they are offering you a contract for next year. The "golden handshake" works out most of the time but... Who wants to be left stranded? If you want to check out other progs, tell the PD, "Dr. PD, I love your program and I can defnitly see myself as a good match there. But I still want to check out a few more places that I applied to. But as of now, you guys are defntly #1 on my list." Or some bs to that effect. Remember, the match is a game. The PD's are playing it (to weasel in the most qualified residents) and you guys should be too! Or you can take the Hero's way out and do what I did--made squirming noises and then told my PD we'll see?
Luck
