For those applying to osteopathic general surgery residencies have most of the interview invites been sent out? I only have a couple and the AOA match is not too far away.

hard to say. several of the programs i applied to are interviewing quite early this year, others are interviewing into December. did you do some audition rotations? how many programs did you apply to?

I applied to both MD and DO programs. My interviews are with programs in which I didn't do an audition rotation. I have more audition rotations in the next couple of months. Have you had many invites so far? (If I may ask)

applied to 10 DO programs, 6 invites so far, 5 interviews scheduled (had to drop one b/c 2 programs were interviewing the same day, and neither could reschedule).

My program is looking at apps, but has not yet sent any invites (soon though). Have faith and patience, they'll start flooding in soon.

sun,

where are you a resident? if you don't mind saying. i'm trying to find out anything i can about the program at lutheran in brooklyn. know anything about it. haven't found much of anything searching the forums. any info you have on any of the other DO surgery programs would be great, too. there's just not much info out there, ya know.

k

I agree with you Kendall on the lack of information about D.O. Gen Surg program information. I've also been searching through different threads and most of the information is scarce or years old.

Are there any D.O. residents who are currently doing gen surg residency that are willing to share any pro/cons about their program? It would be extremely helpful to the future D.O. students wanting to pursue an osteopathic surgical residency.

Sun- Thanks for the encouragement

I am a DO surgery resident at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. I know our interview date is November 7. I think this is the only day, however I have been told that we have had a huge increase in the number of applicants this year. I am not sure what you are looking for but I would start with www.mercydesmoines.org. There is a link that gives the basics of the program. Let me know if I can help.

Anyone care to share their interview invites?

For me, its PCOM and St. Barnabas so far....

Anyone heard from MI surgery programs? I know Ingham has interviews this week.

So far... PCOM, CCOM, Doctor's (Columbus), Grandview (Dayton), Lutheran (Brooklyn), St. Vincent's (Toledo).

Our program, and it seems like all of the DO surgery programs across the board, have seen a huge increase in applicants this year. With only one to three PGY-I spots at most DO surgery programs, it may be reasonable not to expect too many interviews outside of programs you have rotated at.

Finally, some new news... invites from Botsford and MSUCOM Sinai-Grace

I know that it's a bit early for me to be too concerned with this, but do any of you care to share grades/COMLEX scores? I can't find a single thing regarding that, there is very little info on DO GS residencies.

Thanks in advance.

Is this the ONLY date for interviews? So if you cant make that date, thats it? Seems kind of rigid. This is really scary since you may not be able to take off some rotations or have other dates that conflict.

Does anyone know the number of DISTINCT days that programs offer? Averages would be nice to, but specifics would be better.

That was our only day. I think we interviewed 22 applicants. Some of them left right away to catch a flight to St. Louis for Des Peres interview that day. We had over 70+ applications this year and interviewed I believe around 22. I was impressed with all the applicants, either we got a really strong group of candidates or the competition for general surgery within the osteopathic world has increased. I proposed to our program director and coordinator with that many applicants and plus since we are in the process of becoming dual accrediated, we need to have more than one interview day. Good luck to all in the match!

I think that only other interview conflicts are probably a reason you couldn't make it to a interview as a fourth year. Every preceptor I've had as a fourth year so far (& as a third year) has said that the only point of your MS4 year is to apply to & interview for residency positions. Every time I have had to ask for a day off for an interview, I'm told not to even think twice about it & to go do well on the interview.

Has anyone heard anything from the gen surg program in Largo, Fl?

This is classic osteopathy bull****, providing only one day for people to interview. I still don't get why the system is set up to be so shi***. I mean with a limited number of interviews and other responsibilities, such as rotations, programs, both allo and osteo, should make every effort to accomodate the applicants. Allo programs are in GENERAL, very good about that. But alas, osteopathy seems to be stuck in the mud as usual. As far as general complex scores and other stats to be competative, who knows. Much like cranial manipulation, it is wrapped in a very thick foil of mystry with no logical or sensible method to how the madness works. Oh well. Good luck anyways.
