I'm a current D1 at WesternU! It's been a lot of studying but still time for fun here and there. We already did a prep and a little cadcam so that's been pretty cool.

How are you guys doing? What are classes like?

wow cad cam already? Do you even wax in your first semester? We started using cad cam during early fall of second year (may)

Loving it at UCLA so far!

Gross anatomy was overwhelming at first with the amount of material, but the faculty make the course enjoyable, and I'm loving the class.

Waxing is a hit or miss depending on your assigned faculty grader here.

Overall, I've made time to go home every weekend and I am able to get in a solid 7-8 hours of sleep most nights!

I came into it thinking any semblance of a normal life would be out the window and have been pleasantly surprised. I'm sure the upcoming quarters and second year (yikes) will bring me back to reality though haha

We've waxed several teeth, done numerous preps (class 1s, 2s, 5s), and several amalgam fillings. We're in clinic for several hours most days.

The days go by fast since there is almost always an upcoming exam (usually several), and we typically have one to two exams a week with practicals thrown into the mix, and you are constantly busy. I like the pace and most keep with it.

Had one classmate who had to drop out.

liking it so far here at NYU!

doing great on all my exams except anatomy (but will pick it up soon) but the workload is definitely picking up!
We are up to class I and II composites this week and will start class III and IV next week. There is a huge learning curve for a lot of the students here though, I have steady hands since I'm an artist but I have classmates who are still struggling to complete their class II preps. The stress of completing lab work on time and keeping up with courses is getting to all of us here but as a whole my class is really friendly with each other and helpful.

can't complain too much

I would give my left arm for a set of powerpoint lecture slides. That's how D1 is going. I do love my classmates and learn about all sorts of fascinating things, so I can't do too much complaining.

how you your lecturers present slides in class? pdf? or none?

drop out of the school (DDS Program)???

Every year several people are asked to repeat the year or drop out due to poor performance. Dental school is difficult and you have to be dedicated. That being said, dental school is very manageable and if you study then you'll be fine.

Haha yea we did mainly anterior tooth waxups and scanned them as practice.

At least they're not eliminating them, whereas I heard at NYU, they kick you out.

false, here at NYU you could remediate up to 3 failed courses, however more than 3 you have to repeat the entire year. NYU wants your money, they're not going to let go of you so easily

None. "Here's the reading in the book, learn it." Very seldom we get videos to help, and we all rejoice when we do. We have quizzes and case based application questions in teams in lieu of lectures. It has its pros and cons. Anything is an adjustment, and for now I'm longing for lectures/powerpoint slides, but we'll all adjust eventually.

Faculty is very open to feedback and understand its a seismic shift from not only their old curriculum but how we've learned from kindergarten through college.

I think that the new curriculum has the potential to be absolutely wonderful, and that it's not that far away from being just that. Just gotta allow some time to get kinks worked out.

I would die if my school doesn't post lecture slides online.

Block exam's here. It's interesting we are already done with anatomy, biochemistry and embryology starting immunology Monday. It's f*****g brutal not gonna lie but the professors are absolute champs at making sure everyone is keeping up. Also I don't know how it is for you guys but we focus heavily on prepping/thinking/testing like the boards.

Yeah our tests are similar to board questions.

Getting bogged down by the med school curriculum, its pretty intense. We have 3 exams the next 3 weeks - Histology/Pathology, Head and Neck Anatomy, and Human Development (Embryology). Our preclinic is really chill and relaxing so far, its the part of the week that I look forward to the most. We've just been doing waxups and working on our handskills so far.

Oh nice, have they let you practice with handpieces yet?

Nice! Keep it up! You'll be done with D1 before you know it.

It's definitely going! 9 more days of classes until final exam week and the quarter is over. Hard to believe I'm almost a third of the way finished with D1 year.

It's funny reflecting back to the first week. I was so panicked over my exams and now I'm just like "yeah I can memorize 300 BASI slides in 2 days, nbd".

What's your progress in pre-clin? Don't you get like every Monday in the simlab? That's so cool. What kind of stuff have you done there?

MWU-AZ is a top-tier program, no doubt about it.

Yep we are in sim every Monday! So far, we have done waxing, endo accesses, playing with composite veneers, sealants, fluoride varnishes, impressions, class 1 preps, and probably something else that I'm forgetting. Next week (final week of sim for the quarter!) we have more class 1 preps and dental dams

It turns out that Fogorvostan and I sit near each other in SIM. She's super chill. Me, not so much.
I think the last thing I am is chill in sim. I'm always panicking over how I'm not studying for BASI hahah.

Literally spent all of yesterday talking how I have not practiced for the practical yet and I'm basically just going to end up showing up on Friday and hoping for the best...

@fogorvostan @Cello Is there an active social scene on campus?
I think most people stick with their close friend groups and do things together like that. There are some campus wide volunteer events and for instance, there is a D1/D2 fall festival coming up.

Then again, I'm antisocial so there may be more that I'm just unaware of.

3 exams the next 3 weeks?!

I've had 3 exams the past 2 days!!

Ohhhh undergrad.....

Yeah, I would say this is a very social school. I agree with @fogorvostan in that people have sort of formed tight knit groups they hang out with predominantly, but we also go out and socialize together.

Last weekend our class rented a party bus and about 40 of us went out to the clubs in Tempe (home to the infamous ASU party scene). It's a bit like Vegas and Nashville had a baby and named it Tempe. I was hugged by a super drunk bachelor at his bachelor's party who inexplicably wanted a picture with me, and not even a minute later someone holding a "Jesus saves" sign tried to hand me a bible. It was a real trip, haha. To be honest, clubbing isn't really my thing, but I went anyway. Two or three weeks before that ~40 students went to a local hotspot called The Yard which is like a giant patio situated between several bars and restaurants.

We take a lot of classes with optometry students, so I know that the D2s often go to their parties and vice versa. There is no shortage of parties to go to. Last weekend ~25 of our classmates went to a Halloween party at a D2's house. We also have lots of events on campus. This Friday we are having a fall festival for D1 and D2 students with their families.

The D3s and D4s have an indoor soccer team which competes at the Arizona Sports Complex and you can join if you are good enough. We have a pretty active intramural sports league, lots of basketball, volleyball, and soccer.

I would say there is probably at least one party each weekend. Lots of students in our class also like to hang out at a nearby pool and drink a bit to relax. You can typically catch a dozen of them lounging there throughout the week. There is a sports bar right across the street from campus and students like to go there a lot to blow off some steam.

If you are really social and like to go out and have some fun then there will be no shortage of activities for you here at MWU. We study hard, but the class knows how to let loose and have some fun too.

Thank you so much! Yeah I mean, work hard play hard right?

Awesome. This is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you.
