Hello everyone! 🙂

As the title states, I am a D3 at the University of Kentucky. Ask me anything.

Looking forward to some good questions!

And best of luck to each and every single one of you applying this cycle! You can do it!

How much debt to date?

Pros and cons of your school?

Do you plan to practice in Kentucky?

Pros:
1) Small class size for sure. 60-65 students.
2) We are really pushing digital dentistry. Digital Implant designing. Etc.
3) Lots of resources for help.
4) You start clinic beginning of second year.
5) Gym across the street which is a really nice, big, clean gym.
6) Professors and admin are very friendly and invested in your success.
7) Newly built dorms across the street which are beautiful and reasonably priced.
8) Area and living is cheap. You can find 1BR apartments for $450-550/mo.
9) Football and Basketball games are cheap ($5-10).
10) We perform implants as students. We also take Ortho and Oral Surgery and get a lot of experience in Oral Surgery as well. Most students have placed implants by end of 3rd year.

Cons:
1) Because of the small class size, it’s easy to feel the impact of clicks if you’re not in one. But you also know everyone and feel part of a family and I guess it’s like any other family, you have favorites and not-so favorites.
2) $400 parking pass for the year if you commute.
3) Getting in-state after applying from out-of-state is difficult, but not impossible.
4) Some of our exams are not multiple choice and it’s all written. It’s good because you can’t guess the answer but it’s hard because you spent most your life taking multiple choice exams.
5) Second and third year are rough because you are managing clinic PLUS patients PLUS classes AND exams.
6) We have grading systems and some classes you need very high marks to get a B+ or A. For example, B+ is an 88-89.99 and an A is 90-100.

I wouldn’t mind practicing here if the opportunity presents itself. I love the area. There’s a lot to get into here without the crowdedness and expense associated with other major cities like NYC.

What is the likely hood of an OOS student getting in? I really want to go to the University of Kentucky but afraid I won't get in.

Much better than you think. I feel everyone is under the impression only 5 or so are selected from out-of-state. This is not true. Out of 65, a good 25-30 is OOS. We have people from all over from the East coast, West coast, and Florida. A lot come from Florida tbh.

You won’t get in if you don’t apply. It’s like winning the lottery. Everyone complains they never win and it’s too hard to win but the same people crying about it are the ones who didn’t even pay the dollar for the chance.

What were you hoping for? Maybe I misinterpreted the question.

I was wondering about YOU - how much loans have you taken out so far from D1 - D3. Anyone can see what the schools estimates you will take out but some people on here find it helpful to get some real numbers from a current student.

Ex. NYU D1 Complete! AMA!

And if you didn't wanna mention that's fine

I’m not sure how giving you a number, that’s personal for me, would help anyone but if you feel like a number would certainly help you then I’m around $150k right now.

Remember that every student has a different situation. Some have scholarships and carry zero debt. Some are in-state. Some are out of state. Some pay cash and don’t take loans.

Hope this answer helped you in some way.

He wants to know how much you and I will weep at night while he laughs from his cloud of $80k for all 4 years! Haha.

I got into UK as an OOS, check out my DAT breakdown to know scores. However, from my talks with the Fin Aid guy there, it's unlikely that you can transfer your residency and get IS tuition, so you'll be locked in at the OOS rate all 4 years most likely, and that's a lot of dough.

He robbed them lmao

That’s why I didn’t apply

Yes, it’s very difficult. It’s something you would need to apply for. It’s not automatic. I know people who have done it, but it would need to be covered under this:

For the vast majority, if you’re coming in OOS, you’ll be paying OOS.

I found this on UoK dental website and it says the average shadowing hours for a matriculant is 596 hours. Is this realistic?

That’s a lot. So with that many hours, it adds up to fifteen 40-hour weeks. I’m guessing undergrads or grads are being more competitive and spending at least two or three (or more) summers shadowing various dentists.

If people are doing this over the course of 3 or 4 years, definitely even more plausible.

Know of any OOS students that matriculated with strong kentucky ties? That's my situation, but I'm still trying to angle how i can get that sweet IS tuition

Wow that's early! What kind of procedures are you guys doing that early? Cleanings? Drilling and filling?

There are requirements a D2 needs for clinic. It’s about 10 restorations (drilling, filling, etc.), 2 SRPs, denture (C/C), full head and neck exam, a few prophy, oral hygiene instructions, plaque ID, probing assessment, and more. A lot of classmates end up doing RPDs as not every case is a simple denture.

You’ll also be able to do crown preps second semester of second year and start working on crowns. Some classmates have done this, some have not. It all depends on which patient gets assigned to you and what their needs are.

Patients get assigned to you and are yours until you graduate. I was actually surprised this isn’t the case for many dental schools. It’s great to practice developing a bond with your patients. Then when it’s time to graduate you give them to whoever is assigned as your vertical.
