Daily routine with kids, where to live and public school

I'm curious about the daily jive of optometry school. What is a typical day like? Also, I have 2 children (they will be 5 & 7 when I enter school) and also have questions about where to live in Memphis and the public school system. I've been told if we live in Memphis to put the kids in private schools. But I haven't heard much about the outskirts of Memphis. Where are the best places around SCO to live? We have thought about a townhome or a condo. Any recommendations or suggestions? My husband and I are coming to visit SCO (hopefully) in Oct.

Oh yeah - we have heard good things about Mud Island. Is it actually in Memphis or is Mud Island a town?
