Dance class?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it okay to take a Dance class vs. an International Health class? The international health class is obviously more beneficial in terms of medical school, and focuses on global health trends. But the dance class sounds more fun and exciting.

Does it matter?
No it doesn't matter. If you actually have a passion for dance it could even be helpful. International health won't make you stand out, but dance might. Study what you enjoy in undergrad other than the med school pre-requisites

Even if it's only one dance class?

I'm not planning on taking anymore dance classes...that all depends on how much I like this one.

Take the dance class! I'm giving you permission to take the dance class because the more you develop your own interests, the stronger your application will be. Your grades will be higher in the classes that you are excited to take. Most importantly, admissions committees prefer applicants who can demonstrate that they have multiple coping strategies to manage stress. Dance is a fantastic way to relieve stress! If you love the class, consider joining a dance group on campus or learning new forms or styles of dance. Some applicants who have developed their interest in this area have been able to organize and volunteer to dance at hospitals or homes for the elderly to share their joy and talents with others. There are many creative ways to explore this interest that will benefit your application to medical school. Enjoy the class! For more information about how the dance class can help your medical school application, please see this article about "The Best 4 Things to Do Before Medical School."

if thats the case then it won't help you. But neither will the international health class. The truth is, med schools don't care what classes you took, only your GPA. If it doesn't hurt your GPA then have some fun and go for it!

It really doesn't matter. Taking/ not taking one of these classes will not have any impact on your chances at med school. If you're just looking for an extra class for the semester, take whichever you'll enjoy more and will do well in.

My dance classes (2-3) came up in every interview and seemed to be a favorable aspect. N=1 but I'm guessing dance will be more original (especially if you can speak passionately about it) than intl health. YMMV but you ARE asking on a premed forum.

Honestly which will you enjoy more? Can you read a book and get the same concepts as your global health class?

It really doesn't matter, but I'm going to stump for the International Health class! I'm taking one right now and I LOVE it, I personally think it's fun and honestly can't say enough good things about it. But then again, it's my major so take that with a grain of salt.

Basically, take what ever you think will make your semester worthwhile!

I've taken ballroom courses every semester since sophomore year... came up in most of my interviews as well (positively). You need something in your life to balance the stress of medicine!

Take what you are interested in. Although I only took 2 dance courses and some swing dance, I usually brought it up in interviews and received positive feedback.

After I took that dance improvisation especially, I now have high respect and appreciation for dancer performers. It requires different types of intelligence to do well in dance, and this is something undermined and overlooked by pre-meds.

Dance class is a great idea, but getting an A in the class may depend on a skill set you have less mastery of if you weren't born with great coordination. Don't imperil your GPA just to have some fun. Is P/F an option?

P/F is not an option. While I don't have much dance experience, I feel like I can do well in this particular dance class because it is a part of my culture and I know a lot about it.

Yeah this is one of the reasons i want to take this dance class...i feel like it will be a good stress reliever, something different from plain textbook studying.

My biggest passion is music (singing especially) and i would have jumped for the university chorale classes, but they are all conflicting with my required science courses :/

Sometimes, grades might be based on attendance, final performance (as final exam), and other areas.

If you delve further into dance, you will notice that singing isn't much different from dance at an abstract level. Hope you have fun in that class!

I really hope you can make this work in the future!! I really enjoyed singing in a choral ensemble. With careful planning, I fit it in almost every semester. It's a great break from academics, you get to hang out with fun and talented people, and there's always a great sense of accomplishment after a good concert!

I am taking the dance class! It's relatively easy for me though...hope med schools won't mind this. But then again, I'm taking 20 credits this semester, so I feel like I need an easy, stress-reliever class 🙂

I definitely will try to make time for this! I hope to take university chorale next semester!
