Dartmouth ~Class of 2010!~

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am with you guys!

Where is everybody else?

I'm thinking about it... torn, actually. I spent a lot of time in the area around Dartmouth growing up so I definitely have a soft spot for it, and I loved DMS when I visited. For both personal and professional reasons it's probably not the best choice for me (I'm also considering Cornell and UChicago -- TOTALLY different from DMS, I realize), but Dartmouth just keeps tugging at me!

To make matters worse, DMS and Cornell revisits are on the same weekend. I'm not sure how I'm going to figure this one out. What did you guys love so much about it?

DMS revisit is May 5th and 6th. I hope you get in off the waitlist; let us know what happens!

Hey Bachi,

Seeing how you are the ideal person to ask, I was hoping that you can tell more about the living arrangements for most DMS students. Do most live off the main campus in apartments, student housing (is there any?), or houses? Also, is it possible to live on the main Dartmouth campus - as in the student buildings?

Thanks..

I'm trying to decide... I didn't expect to like DMS so much, but I really liked it when I was there. Beautiful area, great hospital. It just seemed like a very good school in a more relaxed, friendly setting. Plus, I have to admit that the corny dvd they sent us kind of sold me too.

I don't think I can justify the airfare for revisit weekend...

um.. i'm still not in yet. i wish...=P but when i went for interview, i stayed with a host MS1, and he was explaining to me that most students live off campus. there's oncampus grad housing (where some med students stay) but its expensive. DMS don't have housing specifically for med students.
I hope it helps..

Hi everyone,
I'm also pretty sure I'm going to DMS this August... I'm a Dartmouth College class of 2006, and am not entirely sure I want to stay in Hanover NH for another four years, but it is a great area. And there are advantages of having the undergraduate college nearby...

As far as housing goes, there's a website (http://www.dartmouthre.com) that you can get listings for apartments, houses, rooms, etc. Most students do live off campus and have a car.

bachi here again... i'm desperately wanting to get into DMS! waitlist waiting is painful! what do you think i should do?? i called the associate dean, she told me she can't do much, but to wait. i feel like i can make a push, but i don't know how... i sent LOI already.. any more suggestions?? 😕

hi, to who know the DMS area, what are some of the places most student live off campus.. any specific names, recommendations, the website statrek had listed above, are the real estates listed all owend by Dartmouth or local? any other sites i could use?
thanks for help!

katabeta..lets hope for the best then! 👍 👍

Why does it seem like there aren't too many DMS people yet???

does anybody know when they send the waitlist postcard? or did anybody get it?

also, does anybody know what gym we have? do we use the grad gym? is that close to DMS? is there a gym at DHMC? nearby Y?

thanks!

Medical students can use the (newly renovated) undergrad gym on-campus at Dartmouth (the undergrad, grad, and med students all share one campus). From what I remember from the tour during interview day, at the DHMC there are exercise facilities in the section that contains the on-call rooms (there are sweet little rooms with beds, telephones, etc. and across the hall from rooms are bathrooms, showers, and workout rooms) but I'm not sure if there's a big main gym in the DHMC. I have no idea about nearby non-affiliated gyms, but you could do a google search.

when is DMS's white coat ceremony?

I'll be joining you guys! I'm pretty sure White Coat for DMS is in October, by the way...

Also, I too am interested in any housing tidbits about Hanover/Dartmouth that may be helpful.

Yes, housing...i too may become very interested in finding a place to live in Hanover very very soon...

m......did anyone get their finan. aid package yet?

Nope. I'm waiting on mine. I have to show them I have ~53,000 dollars or so before they issue me a visa to go, so I'm really hoping a good chunk of that will come from finaid.

when does DMS orientation start?

Well, at this point I think I'm coming up to Hanover too. Although, I'll be in the Brown-Dartmouth program so I guess I'll be leaving 2 years in, both an exciting and depressing thought. I wont be at the second look weekend, but I'll look forward to seeing you all in the fall

I would have loved to go to 2nd Look, but I didn't want to take the time off of work and I really don't have enough $$$ to fly all the way out there...

But, I head that it is pretty fun, so to those that are going - I hope you have a blast!!

I got mine. I got no help from Dartmouth - just federal loans. Depressing.

oh that's still not bad! at max u can only be 38500 in debt this first year. I say it is still sweet

Well, I'll have to take out private loans to make up the difference in the budget. So I'll take the federal max and about 18k in private loans.

How long did it take for you all to receive your aid offers? I just got all must stuff in last week - they said it would take a few weeks, but I really would like to know so I can start figuring stuff out.

Also, anyone figuring out housing yet?

Hey,

Can anyone PM me all the info they sent us about vaccinations. I don't know where I put that sheet (it's a blue piece of paper).

I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

**I have Hepatitis B****.......vaccine.....

do not despair... I have learned that the majority of medical students are in our same shoes . loans, and LOTs of loans. a friend of mine is coming out of emory with 225,000 and another one coming out of northwestern with 320,000. the most important thing is that you are going to somewhere you are going to be happy, and come on it's an Ivy! you can not go wrong with an Ivy.

Yeah, I'm actually going to be living with one of the girls who was also interviewing for MD/PhD when I was. We're probably getting a 2 bedroom apt. in West Lebanon about a 5-10 minute drive from campus (stuff right in Hanover is really expensive.) I think we'll put a deposit down at 2nd look. Are you going? Go here for housing info around campus.

I found a thread from last year that says the initial financial aid quote you get from DMS isn't set in stone. Apparently you meet with the financial aid office during the first few weeks of the semester and they tailor your loan package then. I have no idea if that's actually true. Below are some exerts from that thread. The rest of the tread has other interesting info about DMS (housing, computing, curriculum, etc).

WOW -- just got my aid package today, and no love. none. not even institutional loans. as this would force me to take out ~10 g's/year in private loans, i'm tossing my spot up in the air for y'all --

good luck, and i'm sure we'll all end up where we oughta be --

Have you called the financial aid office about your fin aid packet?

When I got my fin aid package it only covered tuition. For whatever reason they don't like to anticipate your living expenses. In the first couple of weeks everyone here has a one on one meeting with a fin aid advisor and they tailor your budget to what you expect your own expenses to be. Based on that they will give you more loans, either DMS, or federal stafford loans. I even got a Perkins loan for part of it. So if you are still really interested in Dartmouth, you should contact them to find out if that will be the case for you. Like I said before, the fin aid office is really good here and they will most likely give you all the federal loan money that you need.

Fin Aid changed my award 3 times, and each time it got better. I would've been borrowing more at my state school.

I think that another reason for why the initial award letter may not cover the full budget, besides trying to minimize loans, is that the left over amount is their calculated "parental contribution"

Here's the process: Your initial award letter reflects the generic budget, an estimation they came up with. During the beginning of the school year they'll have a meeting with you. During that meeting they'll personalize your budget, and at that point ask you if you'll need to take out more loans. You don't have to feel like you're begging them for money, they expect they'll have to give you more loans.

For those who went to second look, how was it?

Wait - I don't understand. If you get all loans, wont you be $53,000 in debt? I also ask because I just got my package and the aid covers ~38k. Does this mean I need to secure the other 15k in private loans? This whole financial aid business confuses the heck out of me. 😕 😕

Federal Stafford loans max out around $38k. The Dartmouth budget is $53k. So if you max out the federal loans, you can make up the difference in private loans. I agree that the financial aid packages they sent out don't explain it very well.

Second look was awesome. Great weather for the weekend, and pretty much they reaffirmed my original notions about Dartmouth: laid-back and supportive atmosphere, and you can tell the people there (especially faculty and admin staff) almost bleed green. Also, the students are a very tight knit group (as you might expect from ~80 in the incoming class), well-rounded, and it seems like EVERY suggestion from the students is heard and accommodated (see new gym equipment for DHMC, new (real) linens and comforters for on call rooms, (very detailed) patient feedback web interfaces, student curriculum committee changes). Even at the end, they had a Q and A panel and the students looked legitimately happy (everyone from year 1 to 4) and were almost shockingly honest and true to their personality, which I think says volumes about the tenor of the DMS atmosphere (a lot more so than canned answers trying to promote the school).

bottom line: I don't exactly remember a watershed moment during the visting days that I was like "wow, I'm definitely going here," but by the end I had convinced myself. It just felt right and I had to be in a good mood for some reason, right?

see you guys in august.

I'll second all of this. Really, the only thing that was disappointing about the revisit weekend was that there was an outbreak of whooping cough at the hospital (where we were supposed to be and which was obviously completely out of their control) so we were moved to the med school/admission building. Like thefulleffect said, all the med student seem extremely happy (even the 3rd years) and it seems as if the school is extremely supportive of pretty much anything the med students want or need. The current med students, prospective med students, and administration were all phenomenal people and I'm glad to be going to school there. Also, when learning about the curriculum for all four years, I got pretty psyched about it. I even felt disappointed that I won't get to do my third and fourth years for about 5 or 6 years since I'm MD/PhD. Oh yeah, Dartmouth also had an incredible record in the match this year (not just based on specialty, but also the hospitals where people ended up and the fact that no one had to scramble.) By the end of revisit I ended up feeling like Dartmouth was, without a doubt, the right place for me. Anyway, I'll see you all in August.

Nice to hear such good reviews from 2nd look weekend. I wish I'd made the trip. Anyone else still on the fence? I'm signed up for the Dartmouth-Brown program, and I'm back and forth about it. Could be great to move to a new location, and it could be a drag to start over.

Yea, it's really good to hear the second look weekend was great. Wish I could've been there.

bkflaneur - I'm doing the brown-dartmouth program too. It's a little intimidating imagining leaving after two years, particularly because I know I'm going to fall in love with Dartmouth and hate to leave. But, I'm going for it because it will be exciting opportunity to live in different parts of NE and combine the strengths of both schools. I'm sure you have other good options, but hope to see you there in the fall 🙂

I just decided i will be joining you all in August 🙂
