So a friend of mine just took his DAT today and did average to above average except for bio. He got a 16! yikes. Here's breakdown:

AA- 19
TS-18
Bio-16
Gen Chem- 20
orgo-18
RC-20
PA-23
QR-24

He does have a 3.9 something tho, I told him he will probably have to retake cuz of the bio, but I figured I'd get some SDN advice for him as well since he doesnt use the site. Do you think the 16 in bio will drastically hurt his chances of admissions without a retake? If only he could have scraped out at least a 17.. also, for what its worth, he's michigan resident

How did he study for the DAT? I would retake in his situation because those science scores just don't correlate with a 3.9gpa; they are going to leave an admissions committe scratching their heads. If he can bring his TS and AA up into the 20's, I think he will be getting interviews all over the place.

I would bet all my money that he will still get in with his current stats. You can say all you want about the DAT scores but a 3.9 is HUGE.

Retake...for the following reasons

His GPA and his bio score don't match up. That's big discrepancy. I've talked to a few adcoms. When they see that kinda stuff it is a red flag.

two: The reason his AA came out decent is because of a rather high score in QR. That is awesome, but QR is the least important section on the DAT.

GPA doesn't mean squat if you can't back it up with an expected performance. Look at it like this. GPA is like practice. You can practice all you want, but if you fail on the big stage no-one will care.

I think retake will not be that big of a burden for your friend since your friend is already doing quite well in all the other sections. Just read through Cliff's and supplement with different practice tests/questions and he should be getting at least a 19+ after the 90 day cool-down period from the DAT.

Is the 'friends' 😉 GPA from a Community College, though?
My mind goes "Does Not Compute" every time I see people with 3.9-4.0 GPA and sub-20 DAT. I'm not directing this towards the OP or his/her friend, but I really should have gone to a disney land school instead of the school I went to =/
