I am currently a sophomore and I will become a junior during the spring semester. I was wondering if any here thought it would be a good idea for me to take the DAT this summer before I've taken the chem prerequisite. I was going to just go through my text book to review and then do chad's and destroyer. I will have taken the first bio prereq. btw i will send in my app the june following this one.

It'll be hard but it's possible. All depends on how much effort you put into chads/destroyer/studying.

So you haven't taken any Gen Chem or any Organic Chem? And you will have only taken one biology class by the time you take the DAT? Did you just change your majors recently or something? And also I wouldn't take the DAT just because of only taking one Biology class by that time. Gen chem and Organic Chem can be self taught for some. And biology the same.. but it seems with the low amount of pre reqs you have taken it would be hard for you. Then again you could be a genius and learn it all very easily!! If you think your up to the task, go for it. If not, don't. It all matters if you think you can handle it.

If it was me I wouldn't though, but that's just me!

I have taken chemistry before but it was at a community college. I really plan on studying hard because it makes sense to study for the exam when I have the most time.

For Gchem, I think there is no problem if you start to study DAT, you don't need to take classes in 4 year college in order to study DAT,

However, I think you certainely need to take Ochem for sure..

I was going to ask the same thing as Dgeor6. It is kind of weird that your taking your first set of chemistry classes during your junior year. Why didn't you just take gen chem I your first semester at the University your attending? The upside is that Chad will def. make learning the new material A LOT easier, and by the time you do have to take the chem's it will be cake.

I wouldn't do it, just because the lack of bio/chem classes you've been exposed to.

I can only imagine how confusing it would be to teach organic chemistry to yourself. I remember reading one persons post on here had taught themselves ochem and scored like above a 20, but I'm sure that is very rare. I would wait until you've taken ochem and maybe another bio. But if you are a mega genius and think you can handle it, then go for it🙂

I've decided to push off my exam till nxt fall. By then I will have my first chem and a year of bio done. I will still need to learn o chem on my own. I will have to take the exam unless I wait and push my app back another year

I was at a 2 year school till this semester. I could use any science courses from there. So I have to take chem again over here.

It's definitly doable. I took chemistry in freshman year then took the DAT after I graduated, which is about 4 years after. So everything I learned back in freshman year was forgotten and I had to teach myself everything. I was able to pull it off. So yeah, you can do it. Just study hard. It all depends on how much time you're willing to put into it.

You might need to know the sugars- and amino acids chemistry for the DAT which is taught in Ochem 2.

I decided that I'm going to take the DAT this summer. I will study the beginning of June-august I will take the exam. I definitely think it is possible because most of the material is deeper than they go on the prerequisites anyway.

definitely doable. goodluck.
when i started studying for dat, i had forgotten all my chem and bio, but my dat materials prepared me well. so, if you study hard, you'll be fine.
