So I read in a really old post that you can pay for the cancellation fee and call ADA and get a new ID that kinda resets the whole 6 months thing so I could technically take it after my initial 6 months is up and not have to pay for the whole thing again. Has anybody done this?

This is stated in the 2019 DAT Guide
The six-month eligibility period will not be extended, and you will forfeit your testing fee if you do not test within the six-month period.

So even if you reschedule you only have 6 months total.
