Given the following reduction potentials, which of the below choices contain the strongest oxidizing agent?

A) Mg2+ + 2e- ------> Mg -2.4 volts
B) Cd2+ + 2e- ------> Cd. -0.40 volts
C) Ag+. + 1e- -------> Ag. 0.771 volts
D) Fe 3+ + 1e- ------> Fe 2+. -0.70 volts


I undertand that it's going to be the one that will want to be reduced the most. I put D, but e answer is C. Can someone explain why? I dont think i fully understand the concept.

I think for reduction potentials, positive means it is spontaneous, which means that C is the only answer where the reduction will happen spontaneously. This makes this the strongest oxidizing agent.

At least, that's what I got from watching Chad's videos on it 🙂 lesson 7!
 
You're given the reduction potentials and the question asks for the strongest oxidizing agent. Therefore, the values also reflect the values of oxidizing agents. (Think back to OIL RIG--a reduced species is also the oxidizing agent.)

Therefore, the answer is C because it is the only choice that is the most positively reduced (aka the most positive value as written).
