it's a question about the average.
i got 29.25 just like what the solution says.
answer choices are 29 and 30.
the solution says we should round it up because 29 will not be enough.
I don't understand why we can't round it down and say 29 is the answer.

the basic calculation of this question is
(52+x)/250 = 0.325
so the x is 29.25

if i pick 29 as the answer, then the average becomes 0.324
if i pick 30 as the answer, then the average becomes 0.328
0.324 is much closer to 0.325 than 0.328.
so shouldn't the answer be 29?

due to its copy right, i don't know if i can really write the question out.
52 hits in 150 at bats.
how many more hits does he need in next 100 to get average hits/bats of 0.325.

This is a classical trick question I saw on the SAT long long time ago. The reasoning is that the question is asking for how many hits Ruth needs. Since your raw numerical answer has a decimal component, rounding down would mean that you are subtracting that last hit. You can either have a hit or no hit, so the last decimal that you get counts as a hit, thus should be rounded up to 30. Hope this helps.

You can't virtually have 29.#$% hits, and 29 on the dot is not enough to get that avg.

by the way, what number is this question on ur edition? and how many math questions do u have in ur edition? mine has total of 122 questions in math. The one I have is 1st edition or zero edition.
