In #25 it asks to find the roots so you have 2 values. In #38 it does not not ask to find the roots, rather just X, so if its asks to just find X then only 1 answer is possible and you check it by plugging it into the equation correct? Want to make sure this is the right way of thinking of it.

Yes you are correct. Finding the roots is the same as solving the equation for x.
For #38 you can either solve it and check the answers or simply plug in the given answers and see which one/ones work
