DAT DESTROYER QUESTION 34 ochem wittig

well...let's see if i can explain it well.
whenever u see 3 rings on P, assume that it's a wittig reaction with ylide.
This P always has + charge and the C connected to this P will always be - charge. This C i am talking about is not one of the 3 Rings.

Anyway you will cut C=O and connect this C with the C that is - charged from above to this so u will end up having C=C.

Hmm.. I'm still confused about this one. After looking at wiki i cant figure out how the destroyer problem works because there is no C=O for the wittig reagent to convert into C=C.

Any1 care to explain?

your attaching the alkyl branch from the alkyl halid onto the phosphonium salt or wutever its called, which is a sn2 reaction
then your attacking the acetone, which has a carbonyl functional group

that phosphate thing is called an ylide i think, but knowing the mechanism to wittig is unncessary (i think) lol
