Hello everyone,
I just took my DAT today and I know I'll have to re-take it but I was wondering if anybody could tell me what resources are best for gen chem, o chem, and math? Looking at my scores, they're clearly the subjects I need to work on.
PA:18
QR:15
RC:19 (piano passage, ugh)
Bio: 20
GChem: 18
OChem: 17 (I only used Kaplan's online materials to study here...and I had a really crappy o chem teacher last year so I wasn't expecting a stellar score but I need it to be higher)
TS: 18
AA:18
Also, are there any tips on how to study o chem? I can't seem to keep all the reactions straight in my head like E1 or E2, etc.

To improve orgo just get orgo 4 dummies it will clarify substitution and elimination reactions very well.... What was the gen chem and orgo like... in gchem more calculations or more conceptual also wat made orgo hard, mechanisms or was it all basic you just had problems with the basics?

hey

i just started to take the kaplan? did you only use the kaplan for the dat?? how did you study for it, i'm so confused i don't even know how should i start?? Can you pls tell me the questions on the real DAt were kind of similar to the practice questions or different. Pls give me some advice.
Thanks for help

take a look to my breakdown.

Hey-thanks for all the advice so far you guys are great. In response to the chem stuff-gen chem was a lot of conceptual stuff hardly any calculation and I think I did so poorly on o chem b/c I have a weak background on the material...it was frustrating.

gen chem i would suggest kaplan blue book, gen chem text, and cliffs isnt too bad either. destroyer is a little over kill i feel like for gchem but more is always better.

ochem i would say destroyer 3 times over and youll be fine. its not meant to learn from though so start with something simple like kaplan blue book. ive never tried orgo for dummiers but i dont see why not.

bio i recommend cliffs ap bio 100%, great resource to brush up and a little detail. kaplan practice tests are priceless, and destroyer is good to use as a testing resource. its not meant for people just beginning their studying.

qr ive been using kaplan bb and destroyer and some sat math books. the only bad thing about the sat books is that theyre meant to use calculators, so theyre not good for learning how to guesstimate, but a nice review.

pat - crack dat pat.

topscore for timing.

I used textbooks and destroyer. about chem, i just read them all over again.

Yeah-I only used the Kaplan online stuff and I read through the blue book twice. I think I'm going to get destroyer for chemistry and orgo for dummies

I don't mean to come off as mean at all, but why didn't you use any other resource?

Well, I also looked over my old organic chemistry textbook but other than the resources I've posted I haven't used anything else for organic chemistry. There were a lot of practice questions for organic chemistry so I thought with enough practice I'd be okay but it turns out I really need to learn the basics first. I wish I had used more resources before I took the test but what's done is done and I know better now. And don't worry-you didn't sound mean it's a legitimate question

for basics in ochem and gchem, all you have to do is search online. There are so many resources that teachers put online for their students...there are also a few sites that are by publishers (mcgraw/hill, etc) that have those resources online, if you want them for extra study.

Here's one of the sites I just found on google for ochem by mcgraw hill:

http://www.mhhe.com/physsci/chemistry/carey/student/olc/m1_howuse.html

remember, though, these are kind of like a quick fix...to seriously study, use the textbook to get the complete idea.

there's also one that you can test yourself with for ochem...i just can't remember where it is. if i remember, I'll let you know. It was posted on SDN a while ago.

I bought princeton review's AP Chemistry book and I really liked it although I didn't have enough time to do all the problems in it. It explains things in a different light, and has tons of problems which are good. also you can check out examcrackers 1001 questions books, good for mere repetition of problem solving.
