Hi everyone!
So I took my DATs today and it was a pretty good experience overall. Im super excited about being able to type one of these up for everyone, s maybe I can help everyone out the same way people helped me out while I was studying. I've been studying for a while, but I didnt start the SUUUPER serious not-talk-to-anyone-and-not-have-a-lifeness until the month before. At the beginning of spring break is when i started studying like insane-os and only taking breaks to study for class exams.
The following are my scores:

Biology: 20
GC: 21 😀
OC: 20
RC: 22
PAT: 18😡
QR: 16 😎

TS: 21
AA: 20

First off, before I go into some detail..i would like to tell every single person who is currently going crazy with studying that it'll all be ok, and that it'll be worth it at the end. BUT MOST OF ALL...i want to tell people not to stress. Honestly, it is NOT as bad as it seems. I kept on reading all these breakdowns with how awesomely awesome people were doing and how competitive applying to dental school is getting and i'd fliiiiiip out when i'd see my practice topscore scores or how i was doing with Destroyer OC. But seriously, it wasn't that bad. People say that Biology is random...which i understand...but at the same time, it really wasn't out-of-the-ordinary random. It's the same random that you would find on like topscore...except easier, i think. I was getting 17's and 18's in Biology on topscore. I got a 17 THE DAY BEFORE. Honestly, I thought i was going to cry and I ended up freaking out and being stressed instead of just staying chill and studying. haha.

SO:

BIO: 👍 I studied Barron's AP Biology and thought it was pretty great. I'm preettttttyyyy sure that there were a couple of questions that were straight up EXACTLY like the questions at the end of Barron's. So that was great! I was dreading plant questions, but there wasnt anything too hard. I tried memorizing the different types of plant tissues and what not and thank goodness i didnt, because i didnt have any questions about it and that wouldve just wasted brain space. haha. Other than Barrons, I read through alans notes and these other notes that float around here with alans notes, and i thought those were pretty good too. oh, i also did destroyer...and i didnt think that it was allllll that relevant. Its absolutely awesome for other stuff, but not really bio. All in all, i honestly think that the best prep for this section is to just have some good, upper-level biology classes like physiology, cell biology, BIOCHM!, and microbiology.

GC::soexcited: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! in ten zillion years i never wouldve thought that my highest science scores would be GC. SERIOUSLY. I went from getting freaking 13s on practice kaplan exams to a 21 on the real thing!!! AMAZING! I basically had to learn it from scratch since it has been a while, and Chad was definitely awesome in making that process go as smoothly as possible. destroyer was the bestest in reinforcing stuff that chad talked about. So those 2 together were a definite great combo. One last thing...I would DEFINITELY try to keep an eye out for anything that Chad says they try to trick you with, because I spotted some of those during my exam. just saying. 🙄

OC: Basically the same as GC, except couple that with having a pretty good orgo background. There was one reaction-type question that I honestly had no clue what was going on..but other than that, I'd say it was fine. I watched Chad's videos, studied the ACS orgo book that I had to study for my ACS final last year, and then did destroyer questions. I thought it was a good combination. I would take notes on the stuff i got wrong in both ACS and destroyer and then I'd go over my notes and make notecards on those.

PAT: BLAH! CDP is definitely the perfect indicator of how you'll do on this...i kept on getting 18s. On test #9 I got a 19...but i got 18s on basically all of the other ones. So yeah, practice practice practice i guess.
angles are annoying. TFE ill NEVER understand. And basically thats all it takes for you to get an 18. Ill take this score because Im happy with all my other scores, and I dont think its THAT bad. 😴

RC: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Maaaan...all i can say is that i remember this was one of the lowest sections on my ACTs. I was dreading this section, and tried my best to avoid it. I get nervous during this part of the exam and that coupled with the adrenaline rush of S&D is too crazy for me. I was so nervous about this, but BAM! 2 reading samples I already knew a lot about. It was the bestest thing EVER! 😍

QR: I got math destroyer, and went through about 5 exams. Didnt really do much at all for this section. Honestly, I was shooting for a 16, and thats exactly what i got. hahaha. but i DO know is that if you understand the questions in math destroyer, youre basically in an awesome place to get an 18+ in this section.

well look at me, here i thought i wouldnt be one of those people who write on and on for forever...but just one last thing...DONT STRESS ABOUT THIS! youll do much better if you take a deep breath and just do your best. remember that! 🙂

Overall, I'm realllyyy happy with my scores. I know maybe they're not as cool as all the 23+s we've got going on up in here...buut im thankful for my scores!
Kinda wish that PAT was a 19, but hopefully that wont hurt me too much? Is there anyone out there who was kinda in the same situation that I was in? Did it come up during interviews or anything?
Oh, Ive got a pretty solid academic background with great upper level sciences and 3.7ish sGPA.

Awesome job! Most of us do have a section or two that we wish would have been a little higher but I think you just did the Job... Good luck with the Interviews and congrats!

@Philippines: thanks for reassuring me in my previous post a couple days ago about the free kaplan test..really, that test scared me to pieces.

@yankeefan: Im glad I could help! 🙂 Really, you just need to know that youre going to take it and get it over with, and then just do your best and everything else will fall into place! I think some parts of the DAT are made out to seem super terrible, it made me super scared...especially over the randomness of bio. just review and you'll do great, im sure! good luck in may and with the coming application cycle!!!

Alanine good job and congrats! I noticed your AA comes out to 19.8 so I assume its rounded up to 20. is it rounded up or down based on a 0.5 scale? for example, is 20.5 AA equivalent to a 21 or 20?

from what is written on my DAT score sheet, they round it up if it is 0.5 or higher, or round down if it is 0.4 or lower. so a 19.4 is a 19, while a 19.5 is a 20.

nice thats awesome! question can you post percentages next to each section score. I'm just curious what % those are. i'm taking the exam in june and am starting to go loco lol

sure, just keep in mind that every exam form has its own percentiles..so a 90% being a 20 on one exam might not be the same for another. It all depends on the form you get and how others who took the exam did compared to you.

Biology: 20 (87%)
GC: 21 (87.4%)
OC: 20 (81.3%)
RC: 22 (90.3%)
PAT: 18 (61.1%)
QR: 16 (53.2%)
TS: 21 (92.4%)
AA: 20 (87.1%)

i hope you do great in june, btw!

congratulations! awesome job! doesnt it feel great to be done =)

Thanks a lot alanine! I need it. I have a 3.4ish gpa overall and a 3.4ish science GPA, so I must dunk on the DAT like Jordan used to dunk on the Knicks lol

ahhhhh it feels awesome! i dont even know what im supposed to do with my time instead of freaking out over dat stuff! wait....theres still school. haha

Congrats on finishing! If stats say that 50 percent of applicants get into dental school, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. All of your scores, including the QR, are above the 50th percentile.

yeah, i'm definitely not retaking that thing for perceptual ability. Im done with angle ranking and tfe FO LIFE. haha.

Hey Alanine,

Great scores and congratulations. I'm taking my DAT next week and was wondering for the Chemistry section did they leave the calculations in equation format or did you have to actually calculate specifics? Also, were there any lab/equipment questions for Chemistry and Organic Chem? I know that Biology is really broad, but did you encounter many questions in regards to Kingdoms, etc. I know that you said that there weren't many questions on plants, but I've been studying them since the Destroyer asks many questions regarding plants. I'll take your advice into consideration and look into Barron's. Any extra help, guidance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Once again, congrats on your scores =)

Hii, I wish you the best on your DATs next week! The chemistry section was actually not bad at all. if there was a complicated calculation, they had it set up for you so you didnt have to worry about actually calculating it by hand. But that was just my experience. Umm about lab questions, I dont think I really got any for orgo..if i did, i think it was just one. Honestly, I dont remember...that whole 90 minutes went by so quickly.
Barrons is definitely a good resource! its really helpful. I also had cliffs, but i think I only read through half of it a while ago before i read about everyones experience with barrons. It's a really easy read, and theyve got lots of questions that are really helpful at the end of each chapter. The night before my exam, instead of going through destroyer bio, I went through all the barrons questions. I'm pretty sure that helped me a lot.
oh, and i remember someone on sdn saying that they took advil or something before their exam so that they dont get a headache half-way through. I thought was a great idea since my head usually aches after pat, so i did the same and it helped a lot. basically 2 hours after i got out out, by the time the advil stoped being effective, i had THE worst headache ever...so im happy i didnt experience that through the exam.
again, good luck on your exam next week!

Your breakdown kept reminding me of Rugrats heh.

Awesome job by the way!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! well, rugrats WAS my favorite cartoon growing up. soo...i can see how that may have an effect on my writing. 😀

Hey thanks for your help. I sincerely appreciate it and good looks on the Advil, I also read on SDN that Advil is a must for preventative measures.

Thanks for your input and once again congrats!

alanine, id love to read the Barrons Ap Bio, can you please send me a link from Amazon for the copy of the book? Is this this one?

http://www.amazon.com/Barrons-Biolo...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301270238&sr=1-1

Also can you elaborate what you felt was different between cliffs and barrons? I see the Table of Contents seems identical, in terms of chapter layout.

Let me know. Thanks.

yupp, thats the one! i just liked the way barrons was written and the diagrams and the overall layout. most of the material covered was basically the same, i just liked their questions more, too. Im sure you could do great with cliffs, i just liked barrons better.

got ya alanine. how similar was the destroyer for the GC, OC and QR sections?

those scores + that 3.7 sGPA = 👍👍👍

got ya alanine. how similar was the destroyer for the GC, OC and QR sections?

i thought gc destroyer was a really good prep for the actual DATs. Even though the DAT is definitely not as calculation-heavy, but i thought that it basically provided me with enough exposure to all the different types of questions so the actual DAT didnt seem all that bad. The OC section was....a headache. I went through it after i had watched chads videos and had done acs and there were STILL questions where i had no clue what was going on. I would say that the DATs are easier than OC destroyer overall, but that there are like a couple questions that are hard like destroyer's tough questions that they throw in there.
Math destroyer...hmm...well I honestly didnt study this section allll that much (I dont like math very much). I went through 5 of the 10 math destroyer tests but that was about a month ago. I got busy with all the sciences and with pat and started neglecting math once I got back from spring break. But i can tell you that basically if you know math destroyer and the questions in it, the DAT basically has EXTREMELY similar questions with just different numbers. I recognized sooo many of them even though i went through math a month before.
hope this helps!

alanine thanks so much for the help im in prep mode now and I need to murder this haha because of my 3.4 gpa. i want to take the exam in the first week of june while applying and hope to get a decent score to be competitive. I no longer want to go back to my old profession, so hopefully this will work out!

I just want to say congrats Alanine, best of luck to you...

But i have a quick question, after reading your replys i am still wondering how well Chad will prepare me for the OC section... Its been a while since ive taken OC and im only using Chad and destroyer to prep for this section, do you think that will be sufficient enough to do very well or will i have to throw in some other source

personally, i think chad for gc and oc + destroyer gc and oc is a great combination. chad is amazing at explaining things, and pointing out where someone writing the dat could try to trick you.
