I am a little worried about that math score. I dont know what happened i averaged 19 on all ten of the CDM. Hopefully it wont hurt too much and keep me out of school. I have 3.7 gpa and a 3.56 sgpa. I will post a break down later. As for now I am just going to relax!
Ok I thought I would do a break down for you guys now. I will edit later with all my practice test scores when I get home in a couple of days. First off let me just say this test was completly different than the other two. My first exam I took in 2008. I don't live in a city with Kaplan so I moved in with a friend for 6 weeks and did 15 hrs of 1-1 tutoring. That was expensive and not super helpful but I didn't know what else to do so I did that. If I had to do that again i don't that i would or would not. I also took that test before taking Ochem 2 so I was acutal pretty excited with a 18. I had applied already that may before i took the dat so schools were just waiting on scores. My GPA at that time was also right around a 3.00. So needless to say beacuse of my score and gpa along with how late I was getting them to the schools, all i did that year was donate money to aadsas.
I knew I could do better and so i registered to take the dat again in Jan of 2009 by this time i had taken OCHEM 2 and did really really well in it i ended up missing only 1 question on the ACS final exam and it only took me about 35 min to complete. So this time around i was dissapointed to see only a 21 because it was all fresh or so i thought and i had been scoreing 25s or better on practice exams.
The testing experience was the worst thing ever to happen to me in my life!!! The closest testing center was about and hour away from where i lived so i got a hotel the night before because the exam was starting at 8 and i didn't want to be late. Well as many of you know it can be hard to fall asleep so i didn't get much rest. I got the testing with by the way was a different one than the 2008 DAT. Once i got there i was told there would be a parking persons to give me a permit. Well they were not there so i parked in the visitors and went up stairs and started to get things going at the check in and when i told the lady there was no parking person so i just parked in visitor she told me..... Well.... you could leave it there.... and it may still be there when you get out, but.... it may not! so then i was like great am i even going to have a car to get home in. So i ran down and moved it to another lot that was about 8 blocks away. then i had to find my way back to the testing center all this time running hoping that my test was still in the tutorial and had not started.
The next thing i know i see the FRAP question in biology. As if i wasn't already on edge and out of breath after know what was going in reading i was really stressed. When i was about 30 questions into the Bio portion my mouse stoped working. I raised my hand to try to get the prometric lady to notice but it took her a bit and then eveyrones hands went up in the testing center. All the computers had froze! She told us that what we had done on our test so far would be saved and we would be able to pick up where we left off. She also said that our 15 min break had been moved up and that we could take it now and not later. So i got my 15 min break after having been seated for only 30 min. I thought to myself could this get any worse. But the worse part about the freeze up was the computer froze on a question that i had no idea and i mean no idea. So instead of being able to just mark it and move on the questions just stayed on the screen as if to say... "haha sucker you dont know the answer to this and your going to fail the test haha".
Well then i took the rest of the test and saw my scores and when i went to get a print out the lady told me. I am sorry it won't print, but you can call the ada. So i called them there in the waiting room and they are so so kind and said sure we will get you copy... for $50. As if i hadn't already paid enough for their crapy testing experience. So i said screw it and just left beucase it was the first day of a new semester and i had class that afternoon was was hoping to make. But 20 min into the drive the prometic lady called and said they just printed i will put them in the mail. once they i got them in the mail they were not even stamped or anything so they were useless. So that was my second run in with the DAT. I studied over christmas break so about 4 weeks because most of it was still fresh from the first time taking the DAT. I applied and interveiwed at 2 schools and my gpa at this point was about a 3.4.
Now for this last time taking the dat...
For this i knew i had to do well and more than anything i wanted to do well. So the first thing i did was to read the blue book from kaplan and i did about a chapter a night i would underline things in the book that i didn't know 100% or things that i just wanted to get quicker at responding to. After i would finish 1 chapert i would then transfer my underlines to a blank peice of paper and i would try to get it all on one page front and back. some sections in bio took me 2 pages though. I did this for the bio sections and genchem and got just the formulas from the math portion. For Ochem i used the the ACS study guide. After i had finished taking all my notes i went and got chads videos for both ochem and gchem. They were a great resource i would watch them at about 3X speed and just suplament new information onto my kaplan note onlines i had made. This was soooo nice because there were alot of times that chad would say things... I know you get this formula or these rules in your chem class and that is becuase they cover all the rules and all the excptions to the rules but the DAT is limited in these ways so because of that we can use this much simpler formula. Over all he just made alot of connections that i already knew but just put them in a easy way to remember. I did all of this before i really started to study for the dat and neven went back and reviewed at that point i was just putting together my rersources and condenseing information. Once i graduated in april it was time to start to study. I studied every day from 8 am to 6 pm with an hour lunch from 1 to 2. I just split my study time into two hour blocks for each subject that way i wouldn't favor studing the stuff i enjoyed and forget the stuff i hate. i change up each day what order i studied the material in. I did not include reading or PAT in my study day. So all i was going over every day was math, gchem, bio, and ochem.
I did this for about 4 weeks monday to friday and on saterdays i would take 1 CDP test in the mouring followed by 1 CDR test. On week 4 i think it was i took my first practice test which was the Kaplan final. i got a 19.2 i think (again i will post all my scores when i get home in a couple of days). I was excited with that but when i went back and looked at the ones i missed i was not excited and felt i should have done alot better. I then went back to the normal study for 2 more weeks and then took another test i think it was acheiver 1 and did bad i got a 17.4. But i was expecting to not do sooo hot just because i knew their test were harder than the real test. for that point on i would study normal during the week and take a practice test on saterday and take sunday off to hang out with the wife and kid.
This third time for the DAT i had made up my mind that i was not going to go back to testing center number 2 so the next closest was a 4 hr drive but it was ok because it was in my home town. It was a much better experince. My wife and i left for my parents house 2 days before my test. I took a practice test that mourning and then we got in the car. That test was not the best either i got a 18.8 i think. We were also moveing at that time so the day before my test was spend unloading boxes. This was good because when bed time came i was out with in 2 min. The day of test i woke up right on time and headed to the testing center which was the best one out of the three i had seen. The guy helping was super nice i told him; "this may be a weird question but i brought my own markers that haven't been open because last time my makers ran out and doning math in my head sucked and the lady was too slow to get to me so i was without markers for about 15 min. So could i use mine?" he didn't end up letting me which was fine but he opend a two new ones for me and said he would set my computer right infront of his window so if i did raise my hand he would be in there in a jiffy to take care of the problem. So that was great.
Now for the acutal test....
Bio (22) This was the section that i had the most questions marked on. They were questions that i thought i could reason out but i wanted to make sure i saw all the question before time ran out so i just marked them and came back. There were some pretty random ones but it just took a deep breath and some reasoning and they weren't that off the wall. For bio i used my kaplan notes and Destroyer and i would miss a problem in destroyer or on practice test i would add it to my notes so when i went over my notes every day i would go over those weak topics everyday. I would say for the most part i thought bio was eaiser than destroyer but not as basic as kaplan. There were about 5 question that were more complex than either destroyer or kaplan. I didn't think they were as detailed as any of the acheiver hard questions. I would say this section is very doable if you just relax. The key is to stay relaxed. You really know or can figure alot more out than you think.
GChem (26) This section was my favorite because i tutored chemistry during undergrad. I used Chads videos to supplement the notes that i took from the kaplan book. I think if you know kaplan cold you would be fine but all means i would recommend getting chads. My personal view on Kaplan is that it really is pretty good as long as you know it all. The problem i think is that very few people take the time to know it all and don't use it to its potential. Pricey yes but if you know every page of the book it will be enough to do well in most sections but for sure prepare you for 20+ scores in both gchem and ochem. I also liked to the kaplan subject tests. I went through them all 3 times and just did them with out a time limit. I also went through the dat destroyer about 3 times. It was good review but was over kill on the calculations. I wish they would have had more conceptual questions. I think i only had 3 or 4 calculations question but they did require me to calculate all the way to the answer and not just set the problem up. If i had to do it again i think you could get a 20+ score as long as you get both kaplan blue book and supplement with chads one without the other would be a 18-20 score.
Ochem (21) This section i didn't spend too much time on and some days i was really on and getting all the question right i was doing and other days i wasn't getting 1/3 of them correct. The number one source for ochem i would say is the ACS study guide. You can get it for around $50 i think online from the ACS. Destroyer was over kill and tested all the exceptions to the rules. The one thing i would say that helped more than all the problems in destroyer was the road maps. One thing i did do was draw all the road maps out on a white board from memory which really helped me remember the reactions. This was good because this is the area in which chads lacked. Again the subject test of kaplans were very nice. I had a couple of IR Spec questions and a couple of solubility questions which i thought was kinda weird to be in this section but i was happy to see them. Between the ACS guide and Chads you should be set for 20+
PAT (26) CDP it was a great resource. I think it is the best prep for this section. For what every reason i found that i was just able to manipulate the shapes a lot more this time studying for the DAT. I was doing ok on CDP but didn't score higher than a 25. On my first two test i thought it was a pretty good representation of the actual dat in all areas. This time around i thought the key holes were harder in all my CDP test i was normally able to get all the key hole and top front end questions done in about 10 min. On the DAT my 10 min had already passed and i was still on the key holes and had about 3 marked. I did think the angles were very easy which was the section i was missing the most on with CDP. For the hole punch and cube counting they came really easy to me i haven't missed a question on those for any of my CDP test except for 1 question on one of the illusions cubes on CPD but there are not illusions on the real dat but i did have some where cubes were only connected by corners not surfaces which i thought they couldn't do but i guess it didn't hurt me too much. The folding were all pretty easy except for 1 and i spend about 15 min looking at. In the end i finished about 10 early which was good but generally i finished CDP in about 30 min. I have a PDF for my cube counting method and it is not a crazy new idea but if people would like it i will try to make it available i am also trying to make a hole punch PDF. If anyone has question let me know.
Reading (24) I was very excited with this section and my improvement. This was the one section that i think really kept me out of dental school earlier. In fact when i called the schools i was wait listed at told me that if i only had a higher score it wouldn't be a question with your gpa and extracurriculars. This is probably going to sound so dumb but the biggest difference between this test and the past test was that I ACTUAL READ THE PASSAGE this time. i tried to search and destroy on the first two exams and it didn't work too well as you can see. I am not saying it can't and wont work it just didn't for me. It could have been that the first test i had the Piano passage and the second test i had the FRAP so i guess i didn't pick good straws but this time around my passages were interesting to read and i thought easy to understand. I also got CDR this time around and did a test a week and at the end i started to repeat some exams just to get practice and oddly having read the same passage 7 weeks before really didn't help my scores. What i did this time was i read the first question or two and then start reading the passage and take notes with the paragraph number beside my key words. If the answer was there than i answered and looked at the next couple of questions if i hadn't found the answer i would keep reading and until i found it. Once i moved on to the next question if i knew it was in what i already read i would go back and if it wasn't i would keep reading until i found it. It was nice because i didn't have to recall the whole article before looking at the questions. CDR helped me to get comfortable with this method and it worked pretty well for me. I also finished this section with about 5 min left. I also did not have CDR for the first two dats and didn't study RC for the first two either.
QR (16) Yeah I know it sucks. I hope it wont keep me out of school. I was surprised with this score because i had been doing really well on CDR which was great for the timing and the onscreen calculator. I have read a couple of post that said the calculator was super delayed and it was a bit but that that bad. The math question i can say have not changed in difficulty at all and i think this could be the reason why people are doing better in math which is also raising the AA score. Personally i think this next year is going to be really hard for schools because you have people applying that took the dat both with and without the calculator and it is hard to say if a 20 without a calculator compares to a 21 with a calculator. I did have 2 or 3 trig questions that i just skipped and didn't even go back to look at just because i didn't study it at all. Along with CDM i used the math section of Destroyer and it was good and the subject test on kaplan really tested the nitty gritty stuff which was really good to learn and bring it up to speed with CDM.
When I saw my test scores i was excited and it took me a second to see the AA score but at the same time i thought... yeah thats about how i feel i did. The crazy part is that more scores didn't come close to my Achiever scores. I will post what scores i have with me and update the rest later. If anyone has questions let me know. Any any help i can be let me know.
