I took the DAT today and am hoping for some honest feedback about my possibilities.
PAT: 22 (Didn't have time for last 3)
QR: 16 (Didn't even have time to guess on last 6)
RC: 22 (Frapped)
BIO: 22
GC: 17
OC: 18
TS: 19
AA: 19
I have a 3.3 Science and and 3.3 Overall. I am petitioning for a grade change which should go through to change both to a 3.4.
Over 3 years experience as a dental assistant as well as shadowed 3 specialists
Paid research on both dental and non-dental topics, 1 year experience
Tons of service and Leadership both in Dental and outside
Managed and started securities and real estate company so business experience also.
I am hoping to apply just this once so I applied to 20 Schools: USC, UOP, Arizona, BU, Case, Creigton, Marquette, MUSC, Midwestern, NYU, NOVA, Temple, Buffalo, Alabama, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Pitt, VCU.
*If anybody has any information about MUSC I would love to talk more about it with you, I have noticed it is not mentioned often in this network*
Please let me know what you think about these chance. Thank you.
DAT Materials Used:
Destroyer: Great, by far the best study aid out there. I think it is harder than the DAT but if you can do this then the DAT will be much easier. I tried to do 10 problems a day from each section. When I came to a subject I didn't know as well I studied it the next day using the other materials. I loved the road maps.
Topscore: Also great I went through this until I had it memorized. Good to test it out on the computer and pretty accurate with the types of questions.
Ace the Dat: This was helpful to have some more types of questions. They give you 6 tests so there is a lot to review. WARNING there are mistakes in the information though. I have a list and I am going to send it in and receive $5 per mistake. Once these mistakes are taken care of this will become another great resource like Achiever, for the same price. They have great Bio and PAT sections.
Kaplan Blue Book: Good reference and reading material. I read it through before I started with Destroyer or Topscore to get a general knowledge of the different topics.
Other Aides: I made hundreds of flash cards. This was helpful because I remember more when I take notes, plus I reviewed them later. I also liked Kaplan's flash cards a lot. I used Spark Notes Charts and Study Aides flip charts. These were great to see the main concepts of ideas and cut out all the crap.
Study plan: I started intensely 2.5 months ago. I read the blue book and then completed Destroyer like I said 10 questions a day from each section. Then this last month I would spend one day on a practice test. First taking it, then reviewing what I missed, then making flash cards on problems I needed to work on. This last week I have been mainly reviewing Destroyer and my flashcards. I wish I could say I studied 8 hours a day 7 days a week I probably would do much better, but I have been working full time as well as creating my AADSAS application and finishing my Secondaries.
DAT TIPS:
Math: was really surprisingly easy, but it just was so fast. I looked up and had one minute and should have just clicked through to have guesses on each problem. YOU NEED TO FLY WITH THIS SECTION.
Bio: was straight forward, but broad. Understand the whole concept of and idea not just the numerical values. If you understand why something happens as opposed to just what happens you will be more prepared and will memorize it better.
Reading Comp: I hunted and pecked, there isn't enough to read the entire section separately I feel, but as you are searching it doesn't mean that you can not be lightly reading and trying to form an idea about the article.
PAT: I also didn't finish this section. I wrote A B C D E across the top of my page and as I would cancel out an answer I would draw a line underneath it. I think this is one section if you practice timing you can really do well in. I mean I am not a genius but I scored 97% percentile and didn't answer left 3 questions blank.
Gen Chem: My worst subject. I think that there was more setting up equations than actual answers. It wasn't too hard, just not my greatest subject.
O-Chem: Normal questions also. I didn't feel rushed for time in this section. I felt like many of the questions were questions you would see on TOPSCORE or ACETHEDAT
If you have questions with anything let me know, I will do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks and good luck with your tests and applications.
