I have been just reading everyone's threads here for over a year.
I applied last year but did not get into any dental school probably because my low DAT scores and GPA. I took the DAT again today and here are my scores. I know my scores are not that great but I studied about three months (8-10 hours/day) and this is the best scores I ever received.
DAT Feb Today
PAT 21 20 (87%)
QR 16 18 (73.3%)
RC 18 19 (53.3%)
BIO 16 20 (85.5%)
GC 18 19 (70.7%)
OC 18 19 (71.7%)
TS 17 19 (73.6%)
AA 17 19 (73.5%)
My undergrad GPA is 3.4 (science 3.2) and grad GPA is 3.2
I have tons of volunteer work experience and shadowing experiences.
I think I have good LORs from two dentists and two professors.
Do you think I still have a chance?
Materials I used:
Destroyer
Kaplan blue book and online course materials (subject tests and flash cards)
Exam Crackers BIO, Organic Chemistry
AP BIO
Achiever
Study Tips:
Bio - I read kaplan book 2-3 times and read through AP bio book 2 times.
I also went through kaplan bio flash cards 2-3 times and I think it helped me to condense the material. Destroyer bio questions definitely helped a lot to avoid tricky questions.
GC - yes, like everybody else said it is more conceptual. All the calculation questions are written out in answer choices. So, stop spending your time doing calculation questions and understand the concept. If you understand kaplan material in and out you will be fine.
OC- again, if you know kaplan material...you are fine. Again doing destroyer questions and especially the roadmap helped me a lot.
PAT- angles were the hardest section for me. For the beginners, I would recommend the kaplan subject tests...it is the easiest..it will definitely boost your confidence in this section. Then, do the Achiever PAT...if you get discouraged with the scores...go back to Kaplan to review again. 🙂
RC- English is my second language and I did not spend much time preparing for this section. I think the passages were very similar to Achiever.
QR - Time is the key! I had to guess 5-6 questions because I was running out of time. Practice as many questions as you can. I review kaplan QR section and did destroyer QR questions. Then, I did Achiever to practice timing.
Good luck!
