I was aiming for a 21 on the 21st but I am pretty happy with my scores. 😳

A little background:

I am a rising Junior at Stony Brook University (in the Honors College) and I am a biology major. I have a 3.75 GPA and have taken all my pre-reqs but physics. I have a pretty good array of extracurricular activities and some good LORs.

PAT: 19 (69.4)
QR: 20 (95.1)
RC: 20 (78.5)
Bio: 19 (83.5)
GChem: 22 (95.2)
OChem: 21 (89.7)
TS: 20 (91.3)
AA: 20 (93.4)

I am happy with my scores but really wanted a 21. In my mind that was my golden number and I am a little bummed that I wasnt able to hit the 21.

The 20 is the 93.4 percentile which doesnt make much sense to me. I have been looking around SDN and a 20 is generally ~86th percentile. What does that mean? Do dental schools even look at percentiles?

Biology (19) - I consider myself to be really good at biology. Ive taken at least 5 biology classes so far and have done really well in them. Biology is random (as everyone says) and some questions were wordy and it took me a while to understand what they were asking. I am usually able to go through the 40 questions only doubting 2-3 but I had trouble with atleast 6. I am so frustrated by this score. I really thought I would have an easier time with this section.

--Cliff's Biology

--Wikipedia and Google!

GChem (22) - This section was good. Very similar questions to destroyer but without alot of the calculations. I dont recall actually doing alot of math rather just setting up the question.
- Materials Used:
--Kaplan BB
--Chad's Videos
--Destroyer

OChem (21) - I thought I would do better in this section. I was a bit short on time and the last few questions were long (lots of steps) and I felt a bit rushed. Overall it was fairly basic OChem, and most of the reactions you have to know are covered in Chad's Videos and the Destroyer Road Maps.

PAT (19) - I know this score is on the lower side but I am happy. I got CDP and my scores were 16 18 18 19 21. It was overall easier than CDP but I kept losing count on the cubes and it was throwing me off my game. Angles were dumb as always.

15 minute break!!!! USE IT! I ate my snacks and basically tried to sit down and take a breather but ended up pacing around the waiting room like an idiot.

RC (20) - Really not as terrible as I expected. Alot of inference type questions asking about the tone of the passage and such. The first thing I did was quickly click through all the questions to make sure I wasnt getting the piano passage --> yayyy I didnt!!
- Materials Used:
-- Topscore for passages
-- Other Kaplan passages/RC tests I could get my hands on

QR (20)
- I always liked this section on the DAT. Most questions were of similar concepts to the Math Destroyer but some questions were just like really weird. I couldnt figure out how to solve it or what to do.

Is it worth it to retake for the possible chance of getting 1 or 2 points higher. My gut is saying no but I kind of want too to see if I can do better. I wasnt aiming for 24+ I just wanted at least a 21.

What are my chances at competitive schools like Harvard, Colombia and Stony Brook?

Let me know if you have any questions!!!

Seriously, the test is not as bad as you think it is. On test day the most important thing is your mindset be positive, be happy and be excited!!! :highfive::biglove: <--- these are so cute!

Good job! I think you have good scores to be competitive at Harvard and Columbia, provided that you have some extracurricular activities that stand out. From what I recall, Harvard had a 21 dat average and a 3.77 GPA. You are not too far off.Good luck with the application process!

I am taking my test on the 24th...hopefully I can pull off a 24 that day. lol

nice scores! percentiles are specific to the version of the test that you took, so all tests will be different. schools do not see the percentile

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

@ txlonghorn: I am sure you can get the 24!

In regards to the percentile thing (I know its been said before) but its really frustrating. I dont think the DAT is as standardized as it should be and the people with harder test versions get screwed over.

I took the test comparatively early (I am applying next cycle 2012) --> should I retake? I would only want to retake if I could get a 21/22+. Do those 1/2 extra points really make a difference?
