FYI Percentile scores are not sent to dental schools, only your standard scores. I didnt know this and I was freaking out because my percentile dropped. Its on your unofficial score report.
Let me preface my breakdown with the advice that studying to take the DAT the second time is 10x harder than the first. I retook because my QR section was drastically low. As soon as I got my scores the second time I was very happy until I realized that I dropped in my percentile in a bunch of the categories. I'm really not sure what admissions committees look at but I hope they take both into consideration. I focused my studies on QR because I was terrible with timing.
PAT:
CDP all the way, if I practiced this more I know getting 100 percent was possible. Buy the 10 exam one, and know strategies for solving them.
QR:
Math Destroyer was good and tough. It really kicked my butt the first time I went through it. I swear if the real DAT was like that I wouldn't stand a chance. The problems are tough but they make you learn how to do each type of problem and how to do it fast. That is the hardest part about QR, you run out of time, so you need to know all the equations and how to attach each problem. I was going so fast through the problems and about question 20 or so I realized I had about 30 minutes so I slowed my pace to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes because I was rushing. Unfortunately the last 8 problems or so were very difficult and took a bunch of time. I thought I would have time to look over my answers, but instead I had to blindly select at least 4 answers.
RC:
OMMMMMMMGGGGG 😱😱 I got the Physics passage and it took me at least 27 minutes. When I saw it, I started freaking out. I really think this passage should be thrown out. There is no way you could read that passage and answer the questions without looking back, it has nothing to do with reading comprehension whatsoever 👎. I had to S&D for ever single answer. The second passage was manageable, unfortunately I knew absolutely nothing of the subject beforehand. The third was a biology topic and it was easy.
Bio:
One or two questions came out of nowhere but for the most part it was general knowledge you pick up from your courses. I was worried going in because I really didnt study for this the second time. I ran out of time studying all the QR, OC and GC stuff. From the first time I studied: Bio major, KBB (better than review notes because it has colors and better quality pages), Kaplan course, Kaplan Review notes (flipped through pages), Kaplan notecards, Destroyer (really didnt even look at this the second time around), Cliffs , Barrons (flipped through a couple days before), Barrons Notecards
GC:
Chad's all the way😍. I used this the first time and watched them and looked at my notes the second time. I really wish I could have watched them a couple more times. I also wish he offered more problems than the ones on the quizzes. I did Destroyer two weeks before the exam and I have to say it is unnecessarily brutal. It made me really worry about what I would get on the DAT. I wish I didnt use it. Focus on Chad's, its all you need to know. Know every principle he talks about. Do problems with conversions. Go online and get some gen chem problems like the ones he has.
OC:
I took OChem more than two years ago. I was a rockstar at it when I took it. I did really really well on the ACS exam. My advice is: YOU FORGET EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED IN THAT CLASS AFTER BEING OUT OF IT FOR MORE THAN 3 MONTHS. Word of advice for some of you newbies out there cruising SDN- PLAN TO TAKE YOUR DAT ONE TO ONE AND A HALF MONTHS AFTER YOU TAKE OCHEM..... Like GC, Chad's is AMAZING!!!! 😍 He really teaches the main principles you need to know. The key to Ochem is practice, practice, practice. Know the reactivity and why something happens and you will know how to do the problem. I did use destroyer for OChem. Again it is brutally more difficult than the DAT but the "Roadmaps" and synthesis and reactivity problems are worth the money.
My day:
Started my day with "Don't Stop Believing"😀. My exam was at 7:00AM, so I arrived at the testing center at 6:15AM to look over my formula cards. This guy pulls up next to me. He had almost every spot available in the parking lot but he choses the one next to me. He blasts Techno music for 25 minutes! I could hear everything he was playing, it was moving his car and my car. uuuuggggggg
So irritating!!!! So I move my car to the other side of the parking lot an I could still hear it but at least it wasnt as loud. Went into the center about 6:45 and there was a ton of people there because it was the first time slot for all tests. I started freaking out at 7:00 because I still hadnt been called and for some reason I freaked myself out into believing that the test would start without me and I would run out of time. PANIC ATTACK, maybe heart attack 😉 Its a lot of pressure, having all the hours of studying and knowing I had to do well to get in this cycle. So as I'm freaking out, I finally calm myself down by
thinking of how my body is responding to stress, i.e. the processes that I needed to know for the exam, I'm going through the hormones that are probably twice their levels, my breathing, my blood pH, heart rate....it was a nice little review and it managed to calm me down significantly. I went into my cubbie and my marathon began. I have to say everyone there was really nice and they exchanged my sheets and markers and gave me tissues for erasing. Could I have done better? Probably, it took me awhile to figure out what study tactics worked well for me. I have a ton of advice if any of you want to pm me. Best of luck to all of you!
