So I took the DAT today and am very disappointed with it. Here are my scores, please let me know what you guys think.

Perceptual: 17
QR:17
RC: 20
Bio: 17
Gen chem: 20
Orgo: 19
TS:18
AA:19

GPA: 3.9
Science GPA: 3.85

I have done lots of shadowing and research. I am a postbac with a research background and I have published several first and second author papers.

I am very disappointed with biology. The questions were very very random. Taxonomy, embryology, genetics and very few questions from the human section. If it was it was very specific and detailed. 2 questions on class and phylum which I have never seen. I was consistently getting 21 on topscore and datqvalt. I will give a breakdown shortly but guys do you think I have a chance. I literally cried when I saw the scores. Please advice.
Thanks

Your right bud, the bio is what got ya. If your app is already out I'd say go ahead and roll the dice with the 19. You'll probably be o.k. with that crazy high GPA.

Don't cry.

Your scores are within range for many schools, and that GPA is stellar. I wouldn't be surprised to see invites if I were you.

I am a postbac and I am taking only pre-req courses. I have only completed one year of pre-reqs. I have not taken any of the upper level courses for bio. I have not take organic as of yet and is scheduled next semester. But Bio man was bad. Nothing from BIO 1 or 2 and I was perfect in it. I had lab questions in nearly all my sections which I havent taken yet. I was surprised to see them and some questions were very detailed. Few questions on taxonomy asking classes which I had never seen before. Very picky questions from embryology, physiology which I was not ready for. Much much harder than even destroyer I would say. I have a very strong medical background but not this stuff. I am so sad that my best turned out to be my worst. I went through Barrons, kaplan blue book, my class notes which are from Campbell but nothing showed up. Maybe it was a hard test.
Do they except student at that 17 score of Bio?

average dat is a 19 for accepted student (for most schools) meanwhile the GPA is way above average. enjoy dental school!

PAT: Harder than topscore. Some weird figures.
Keyholes: Some weird figures which I had not seen before but was fine. Comparative to topscore.
Angle ranking: I had the natural for this thing and this is probably what must have saved my scores. I did not use any of the techniques people have said but I just look at the angle and lines and I am able to figure it out and so I didnt change much here and went in with my way.
TFE: Way harder than topscore. People are right when they say you have to imagine the figures now. You cannot figure out using dashed lines and solid lines or counting. It just doesnt work.
Pattern folding: very weird fold and were hard to make out how they have been folded. With that said there were few of them and majority were fine.
Cube counting: Was fine just used the counting method
Folding: This was hard too but mixed with a few simple ones.
I had practised topscore 3-4 times, kaplan blue book, ada 2007. However I did not have the money to spend for crack dat but it is doable without it if you practise alot.
Biology: Totally random like others have said. You need upper level courses for them. Study plant biology, taxonomy, genetics, physiology, embryology. Very few were straight forward compared to the other test I have done. I did topscore, destroyer, kaplan, 3 free datqvault and scored 21 or above in all. Lab questions asking for radioactivity (I was open mouth when I saw this). Topscore is way way easier than the test. Maybe it was my test but even with research background I had questions which I did not know. None of the regular concepts were tested. Dont go in with Allans notes. I knew most of the biology stuff in and out but not much did it show up, except a couple. I would infact say that your class notes are not enough for this section. Maybe it was my test.
Gen Chem: Yes you have to calculate few questions rather than just set it up in equational form as others have said. Lab questions 2-3 and I havent taken the labs yet 🙁. I was like What? You have to know your stuff inside out not just know the formulas or how to solve them. Because most problems I had not seen before in destroyer or topscore. Oh and interestingly you had to calculate everything backward which I found weird. So be prepared to solve and do it fast since time is of essence. I was consistently scoring 21 or 22 on topscore so my score actually dropped.
Orgo: I havent taken orgo as of yet but this section was the easiest but it did have lab questions too. I had not done mass spec as Chad has not covered it so I must have missed it. Chad is great and me not having done orgo and pulling 19 was fine. I was scared of this section but it is easy and doable. I did destroyer, topscore, kaplan blue book, ada 2007. Not much to say here.
Reading: I was good at it and did not have problems with it from the start. Topscore is easier. Most of the questions were search and destroy but some were definitely tone questions. So I had to read the entire passage to answer them. I was getting around 22 on topscore but my scores are lower in the test. The key again is timing so practise. I barely barely finished on time although I dont have a problem with english.
Perceptual ability: Ok. This was a surprise for me. 90% were word problems. Back to back without breaks. In between they throw 1-2 simple questions. I did go through Chads videos and it helped, but not much. Had couple of stats, graphs, area under the curve, conversions (know all- I thought they would test only the usuall ones and provide the rest but I was totally wrong. You have to know all the conversion). Topscore is way easier than this. The word problems took some time for me to solve as most of them you had to construct equations and solve them out, so I had a hard time keeping up with the time and had to rush in the end. I did use the calculator and it worked fine for me without any lags or problems so go ahead and use it. Trig was straight forward. Know word problems back and forth coz they often reverse it on you and be quick. I did not do Maths destroyer as I was doing fine with it on topscore/ destroyer but I was wrong. I was getting around 21 on topscore but the exam was way harder. Do not expect too see simple algebra or rearranging. Most of it was setting them up first using word problems and then solving it.

I dont intend to discourage but at least for my test, most of the questions were ones not covered in destroyer or topscore, kaplan blue book or the ada 2007. I read most of the stuff more my class notes which was way too much for the test (didnt want to take any chances) but apparently didnt help much. Maybe it was my test.
I have had alot of help on this forum so if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I want to thank everyone who answered my questions and helped me out through everything. Overall I am disappointed and very worried right now if I would get any interview call as I really dont want to go through this again.
Thanks.

Thanks for your breakdown.

I must admit, I'm sort of surprised you took the DAT without ochem, labs, and some upper division bios.

You may have felt the exam to be off-key because despite going through those resources, the exam isn't meant to be taken before those pre-reqs. Those resources simply can't mimic the breadth of a semester course.

Nonetheless, a 19 is somewhat competitive with your GPA. To ease your anxiety I would call the schools your interested in, no one on this forum can give you the answers your looking for.

With Bio I was pretty confident. I have a very strong biology background and am pretty good at those courses but I think they were too picky. I cant tell you the questions due to restrictions but if I told you would be shocked to hear them. But even with gen chem which I have taken, the questions were not covered in destroyer or topscore and you had to calculate most of it backwards which was kinda surprising.
I will try to call the schools and see if it is worth it. Thanks

I was a Biology major in college and graduated with a 3.94 science gpa. I agree with you about the biology. It was completely random and not what i was expecting. It was my lowest score out of all the sections... very disappointed.

I havent rolled out my application as of yet. Do you think I should still apply. Are there any specific schools you guys would recommend.

When you said that you haven't taken ochem yet, did you mean that you have yet to take it in college?

Yep. Have it next semester. I am in a post bac course and havent taken it in years. So didnt know anything in ochem till I started studying in May of this year but chad was the man. I feel like giving him a big hug for his awesome job. Just that my bio got me down. Did you apply already to schools? Just wondering what you scored in bio and if you had any problems with it. Any schools you would recommend.

To OP, I would be surprised if you don't get any interviews, especially with your GPA and ECs. Good luck!

Also, how many times did you go over Destroyer?

I went through 1 time and marked the problems I did not get the first time and redid them later. For orgo I did repeated all of them since I was not too confident and that helped me alot.

That is a super impressive score for never have taken ochem! You will destroy the ochem next semester! Definitely one of my favorite classes.

I would not worry to much about your score in bio because your gpa is excellent and is likely to act as a buffer. I kind of slacked off in my studying for bio because it was my strength in school, but i thought there were way to many generic questions about taxonomy, ecology, and even animal behavior. I got a 19 in bio, not bad, just a little disappointing because it was the subject I was most confident in.

Yes I have applied. I decided I wanted to stay on the east coast, so I applied to penn, pitt, temple, OSU, columbia, boston u, and tufts. If I were you I would absolutely apply to temple, pitt, tufts and BU. I know penn likes high scores and OSU's class is roughly 75% in state students, so those could be a waste of money, but I would recommend applying to any school you think you might like to attend. Be confident, you are a good candidate and you will get interviews.

How did you study " search and destroy " for reading section ?

I am studying for reading now but I think the questions ask so detail which I have to read everything detail at first, and then go to the questions. Can you teach me how to do the " search and destroy " thing ?

PM me and will tell you how I did it. I Will try my best to help you with it.

radioactivity question for bio section? I've taken bio lab and I don't remember any thing related to radioactivity in bio -_-. Sounds like an impossible test for me
