My first ever post in this forum. I really need advices from your guys because I trust people in this forum more than my pre-health advisors.
Although I'm happy with most of my scores, the low QR made me disappointed about myself. I thought math was my strongest subject, but I was wrong...
DAT breakdown: AA 19 BIO 19 GC 21 OC 22 QR 15 RC 18 PA 25
For anyone who wants to know my studying journey and my background, I didn't know what I want to do until the beginning of this year. Many events led me to dentistry. By the time, I realized that I needed to put a lot of efforts in order to get into dental schools, and I was willing to do that. I couldn't study for the DAT earlier as I wanted because I took 5 classes (3 science classes) in the spring. I started studying in the middle of May. I spent 2 days for shadowing and volunteering. Another 2 days for my summer classes. I was also working, so I couldn't study full time for the DAT. I tried to study as much as I could when I'm free, but it still took me a long time to review material (especially genera biology). Until 2 weeks before my test, I stopped shadowing and volunteering to focus on studying. I studied everyday (except the days I have classes) from 8am to ~ 2am while babysitting my 2 years old niece (she is a good girl 🙂 My family was so supportive. Whenever I'm stressed, I just spend more time with them, and it helps a lot.
QR: I spent about 2 days to study for QR.I took 3 hours to finish the QR section in the DAT Destroyer 2014, and it's doable. I actually felt good about this section. I also tried the 2007 sample test, and I thought I could get at least 19-20 in QR. I have to say that DAT destroyer is the most representative for the QR section. I wish I did the math destroyer. Oh well, I guess I underestimated the most important test of my life. I'm not sure if this is the same for everyone or not, but my QR section was ~ 75% words problems
...those costed me a lot of time. I was desperately looking for trigonometry, algebra, numeric calculation or else. But no, my QR was all about statistics, unit conversion, applied math and probability. I was so happy when I saw one trig question and few algebra. It wasn't too hard, but is it fair to give me ton of words problems to solve within 45 minutes? Tip for anyone take the DAT soon, practice your QR section with math destroyer and expect unexpected events.
BIO, GC, OC: I also used DAT Destroyer for these sections, but I didn't have enough time to finish all of them. It was a great resource to practice and funny too. Haha some hilarious explanations helped my studying less stressful. Thanks to Dr. Romano and Nancy. Qvault was also a great resource to study for Biology.
GC, OC: Chad's videos are sooo awesome. He covered everything needed for the test in a interesting way. Love it!
PA: Yes, thanks to DAT bootcamp for my PA score. The real test was easier than Bootcamp. Bootcamp is a must-have to conquer PA section.
RC: I'm happy with my RC score even though it's low. I came to America about 5 years ago. I can't complain. I didn't study for this section because reading isn't something that I can learn in a limited time.
Alright, now the real question comes. What should I do with those scores? I don't want to retake it. (But if I have to, I will )
I'm Florida resident. I applied to 3 schools in Florida. I have ~ 100 shadowing hours, ~160 volunteer hours. My GPA is 4.0 (I'm done with prerequisites) Which out of state schools should I apply with those stats?
Thanks guys.
Congratulations!
You scores are very nice and I see no reason you would have to retake the DAT because of your QR score, most schools don't put a lot of weight in that section. I would call the Florida schools and discuss your stats, etc.
My students have been accepted into NOVA with similar scores and a lessor GPA.
Wishing you the best!
Dr. Romano and Nancy
I'm thinking about this tooIf you have taken math courses and performed well, you can try to use that to justify it. Don't address it unless they ask
Thanks so much for encouraging me, Dr. Romano and Nancy!Congratulations!
