Hi guys,

Thank you very much for all your posts/messages wishing me good luck.
I just came back from the testing center, and I am not sure how I feel about my score.

PAT - 24
QR - 19
RC - 19
Bio - 19
GC - 20
OC - 18
Total Science - 19
Academic Average - 19

GPA - 3.9
Science GPA - 3.9 (this includes 9 upper level courses. anatomy, genetics, etc..)

I am very disappointed with my QR score. I was getting 28~30 on all Kaplan practice tests! I really don't know what happened here. I know dental schools don't really care much about the QR section, but I wanted it to be my AA booster.

As far as other sections go, I got the same score that I was getting on Kaplan practice tests (1 point lower than Practice Test #1).

What do you guys think of my score? Columbia is one of my top choices, but I don't think it's going to happen 🙁

Let me know if you have more specific questions 🙂

you're right..columbia is not going to happen but listen..you have an awesome gpa and solid scores so i wouldn't sweat it. goodwork!

Good job! I think you can relax. Scores haven't been as crazy as last year and those are solid all the way through. With that GPA you are golden.

I agree, Columbia is a long shot, but you've got nothing to lose (except the money you paid to apply already) by hoping for the best.

Goodluck with the rest of it.

nice scores! congrats! so what happened why did you get low on qr? did you run out of time or where there questions that you werent aware of? yea i want qr & rc to be my AA booster as well. I heard kaplan has crazy qr probs if you can get 28-30 on kaplan's test I would assume that you can go awesome on DAT hmmm...m amazed

I am not sure.
I didn't run out of time. There was one question that I wasn't sure about, but all seemed pretty easy and straight forward.

By the way, if you have not taken the DAT, learn your trig functions (sin, cos, tan, cot, sec, csc, and some of the basic trig identities). I didn't know this was going to be on the QR section of the DAT. Most questions were set-ups, instead of brute force of solving everything (though I actually prefer this).

Thanks for all the good comments!

thanks! yea i memorized them trig funcs....time is still a lil bit of issue for me....

That's good. Also, I had about 7-8 angle questions (with parallel lines, perpendicular lines). These were pretty easy and saved me a lot of time (I was planning on doing one question / minute). I really have no idea what questions I missed. Considering that I was a 4.0 math major, this is bothering me very very much. Oh my goodness.

I know...it would bother me too! getting 28 on kaplan tests and then scoring lower is heart breaking. Heck I cant even get above 21 on topscore & achiever lol....so was hoping that i will get minimum of 21 on real thing. But after reading your post I am worried that my score might go down as well on real thing. yea i like those line equation questions where you have to figure out paralle or perpendicular lines, slopes, distance etc...but i hate those geometry & probability questions.

That is ridiculous... too bad you can't see what you got wrong. Sorry! But those scores are awesome.

I'm pretty terrible at math and since it seems that people who are apparently quite good at math are still getting 'low' scores. So I'm thinking my strategy might be to just guess on anything that isn't simple math and maybe I'll get a 12...but I probably will even if I work every problem !

I forgot my question.... How was the bio section? People are saying it is more reasoning based. What kind of questions does that mean? Would you mind giving an example (not a question from the test) ... but the general way questions are asked?

Thanks a lot!

Those are really good scores. Maybe not Columbia good but still very solid. I am so freaked out about the QR section. I think a 19 is a solid score considering the recent averages in that section so I wouldn't sweat it too much...

Well done!🙂

mstooth,

what have you been using for QR? I'm just curious, as it is my major concern and you seem semi confident.... or at least have hopes that it will actually pull up your AA.

I'm on the other end and figure QR will be my demise.

i didnt use anything extra...used topscore, achiever and destroyer. I like math and its fun doing math section...m not horrified like I am when I am doing bio or chem...may be that is why I sound confident. But I havnt been scoring marvelous on Qr ..i score around 20-21...and i know I have capacity to score higher so would love to do extra tests but dont really have any tests left except barrons. You have been posting QR questions...looks like you are doing your homework. how have you been scoring on QR? hope you dont mind me asking...

Of course not.

I start taking topscore and achiever stuff on Monday, so we will see how it is looking then.

Kaplan subject test stuff killed me. I couldn't solve many of the word problems with unlimited time. Algebra stuff, not so bad.

I've been through an entire Kaplan GMAT/GRE workbook which was okay, kinda too easy.

I also did a book called "Word Problems for Standardized Tests" which was okay as well. Some good problems, but I can rarely do them in under a minute.

I think I'm going to go check out a stats book and trig book, cause I'm very weak in both of those.

I'll probably go through Barron's QR tonight. I don't know, even with the extra resources I still feel pretty shaky. I also have a couple Kaplan full lengths to do, the ADA practice test, and a extra word problem book (but the problems are too hard, as far as numbers, so I may skip that one).

The last couple peeps that posted up decent QR scores really emphasized the importance of skipping anything that gives any problem, so I guess I'm going to try to stick to that and hope for an 18+

wow you have been practicing a lot of problems, which is a key to success in QR - practice practice practice! i think you are worrying for no reason...take a topscore/achiever and see where you stand (let me know if u dnt mind how u do on the first test) .. i think you will def get 18+. Will see how it goes from there....

There were about 3 questions that required logical thinking ability. It seemed like the question itself contained all the information necessary to answer it. Just brush up on laboratory techniques (like gel chromatography, centrifugation... etc)

That sounds good! You should definitely skip the ones that seem hard and then return to them at the end. It seemed like some of the math questions were very easy (like asking a simple probability), and it would be a shame if you ran out of time and didn't get to answer these questions 🙂 Good luck!
