Hey guys,

Took my DAT in July and wanted to get on here to share my scores and thoughts, however, as everyone in here knows, the application process is very time consuming. Anyhow, here are my scores and thoughts. I will also include my DAT scores I took in September of '08 for anyone who is feeling a bit down on a disappointing DAT performance. If nothing more, I hope this will provide a little motivation and hope.

DAT July '10

PA 20 85.4%
QR 16 53.2
RC 22 90.3
Bio 19 77.1
GC 22 90.1
OC 23 94.3
TS 21 92.4
AA 20 87.1

DAT Sep. ‘08

PA 14 16.4%
QR 13 15.1
RC 21 80.2
Bio 18 61.9
GC 18 59.1
OC 18 61.9
TS 18 61.7
AA 18 60.7

I was very pleased - probably obvious - with my scores the second time around, especially compared to round 1. I took the DAT the first time around without the patience and diligence that is necessary for an ‘acceptable’ score. I realize everyone’s standards are different, but I was not happy with my result the first time around. It was intimidating to see those kinds of numbers after 4 hours spent sitting in front of a computer screen knowing that this has a large part in determining my future.

What I can say confidently about the DAT is that it is a mix of hard work and ‘luck.’ Anyone with a solid work ethic can be successful. Put in the time and you will be very pleased with your result.

If you’re worried or nervous beyond belief, I can relate, but it’s all in the preparation. Get your hands on the right materials and sacrifice some of that time spent in front of the television or at a bar (although not all of that time, b/c you will need a drink here or there to get away from a potential brain drain). With that said, if anyone has any questions about the route I took then please PM me and I would be more than happy to help. I realize my scores aren’t astronomical, but my message isn’t directed to those with that talent. Again, if you have any questions or need any study material (I own a lot of helpful resources) please let me know. This site is great for those who want to make a difference through dentistry. Good luck to all of you. Prepare and persevere!

i will be also retaking my DATs and that is because i did not do well on the RC. So how did you prepare yourself for the RC and what is your strategy during the ACTUAL exam. does anyone know how much right you need to get in order to get atleast an 18?

THanks

Hey I got 24 in RC and this is what I did
I read the entire article first but writing important words for each paragraph.. so on my paper as I read, I would have
example:
1) glucose metabolism
2) Na+/K+ pump
3) sodium channels
etc...

Try to understand what's going on in the passage. I took about 7~8 minutes reading the entire article writing down important points for each paragraph and spent 11~12 minutes answering questions.
I don't know if this works for everyone but I scored 15 in RC on my first DAT and with this strategy I improved to 24 in RC. English is my 2nd language... so if I can get 24.... anyone can do well in RC
Try this out with CDR, topscore or whatever your studying with.

Good luck!

Hey biostudent, I got a 25 on RC and I believe I have a more effective method.

So before you begin the RC on the real DAT, you are given a 15 minute break. During that time, aside from using the restroom, number your scratch paper 1-17. So when you begin, you go through all the questions for that first passage and write down the keywords in the questions.

Ex.
1. What is the rate of chaperone enzyme blah blah blah

Write down on our paper

1. rate, chaperone

I hope you get the picture but this method really helps because you onyl have to read the passage once after you've written keywords from the question themselves. It's a simple and effective Search and Destroy.
