So this afternoon I took the DAT in the beautiful city of Chicago, and it went ok for the most part... except for the PAT section.
Bio- 19
G Chem- 23
Orgo- 18
PAT- 15 🙁
Reading-18
Math-18
AA- 19
You guys think I have any chance at all with the 15? I have a 3.6 GPA and pretty good extra-curriculars. This was unfortunate considering I have never scored this low on any practice exam (mostly 17, sometime 18).
Here's a quick break-down for all of you that have not taken the exam yet:
(Quick side-note: The exam I took is the one with the piano passage, not the FRAPP version)
Bio- In my opinion this section was the hardest of the sciences. Not very specific at all- know the basics. The first six questions are hard- don't get discouraged, just keep moving on. Mark and move.
Chem- Remarkably easy. An eight grader with a rudimentary knowledge of chemistry could score well here.
Orgo- Very straightforward- nothing tricky. I should have done better here. I had to rush towards the end of the section.
PAT- I am just weak at this due to poor time management and I panic. Take too long on the keyholes and contemplate too much over the angles. Overall it's not that hard. Cubes are a joke, as is the paper folding.
Reading- First two passages are a breeze. The third is a different story. In fact, it's a beast. It's on a piano, and it's just downright brutal. I think I got no more than 4/5 right on this passage. If you play the Piano you have a huge edge, as you may be able to answer all of the questions without reading the passage. Make sure to study the piano on wikipedia. Know it well- hammers, tuning pins, # of strings, soundboard. Everything.
Math- Hard. Lots of word problems. You cannot panic, or else you're toast. Mark and move, answer what you know. A lot of the questions you can answer by plugging in answer choices and seeing which logically fits.
Overall impression of the exam: Straightforward- DAT achiever is at least twice as hard, while Topscore also harder but not as much.
Please feel free to ask me about anything. I'd be more than happy to help you guys out!
