When you are doing equilibrium do not concern yourself with solids or pure liquids because their concentrations are constant. Consult any General Chemistry book to see some good examples.

1. In those questions that deal with heats of formation- you need to make sure elements are in their standard states (so Br2 is liquid, Hg is liquid, O2 is gas, all other metals are solids, etc.) and only 1 mol of product is produced.
2. In entropy questions- if they ask whether DeltaS is positive or negative...look at the phases.
