Dat must for dds apart from nbde and toefl??

I am pretty confused about DAT? Is it compulsory for admission into dds? I just got to know some schools ask for it but i wanted to know ur views guys about the dds criteria for people taking admission from next yr that is 2012....as off the evaluation for nbde also changed.......is there any other change u guys are aware of..please let me know........

If you are a foreign trained dentist (which I am just going to assume you are based upon your status and your level of English grammar) then you may apply for advanced standing at US Dental Schools without taking the DAT. I believe this is true for virtually every US Dental School that offers International Education programs. Someone can jump in and correct me if I am wrong. You will instead need official documentation for the National Board Examination Part 1 (NBDE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

The DAT is compulsory for US Dental School applicants without advanced standing. Domestic and International students are required to take the DAT for consideration.

The only exception to this rule would be for US Medical Students looking to transfer into Dental School or for US trained Physicians seeking dental training. Both of which would require copies of the USMLE Step 1 at the very minimum.

You should direct specific questions to dental schools that interest you (either by Phone or Email).

hi..i have done my bds here in india...i wanted to go there for further studies but as off i just know dds is the only way for international students....so i wanted to knw basically abt new jersey school n new york school? if they required DAT?

You do not need to take the DAT if you are a foreign trained dentist seeking advanced standing.

You need scores from the NBDE Part 1 and TOEFL.

If your goal is to practice in the United States or explore advanced education opportunities (i.e. Dental Residency Programs) you will need to earn a DMD or DDS degree from a US dental school through a tract similar in nature to the one linked above on the NYU website.

you seem pretty confused about lot of things. I'll try to help you as much i can.

1. You are a foreign trained dentist - there's an "international dentist" section in SDN forums..here you can find similar people/similar questions/similar situations.

2. You're asking specific questions about universities. Please don't depend on people on SDN to copy paste you links and info.Do things on your own. For starters - there is CAAPID directory. Then go to each school website. They have all info. Use GOOGLE a lot!! All questions you asked are right there.

3. You are applying for the next cycle - For NYU you must write DAT -as stated in their website. Other schools will release requirements regarding next cycle - by Feb 2012 @ least. clear NBDE 1 first and TOEFL by Feb 2012 or so.

I think you have only started looking up for Advanced standing programme. Do google and research as much as you can yourself. All the best.

This appears to be a function of the changes to the NBDE - moving from a graded format examination to a pass/fail format. It seems that future NYU applicants must take the DAT as an additional requirement to account for the lost standard of admission. I should have clarified this note of confusion. Before the NBDE proposed changes, the DAT was not compulsory for foreign dentists seeking advanced standing. And whether this new change in requiring DAT scores is now common amongst all programs is something you will have to research on your own.
