For the O-chem section of the DAT, do we need to know the values of chemical shifts in the H-NMR & C-NMR? I know the general trend but don't know if I should memorize them. Thank you in advance!

I would know that an Aromatic proton comes in around 7 tau , while the aldehydic proton between 9-10, and the carboxy acid proton around 11-13. The main IR landmarks for the DAT will be 1720 cm-1 for the C=O group as well as 3300 cm-1 for the OH of an alcohol. I make sure my students know 1650 for an alkene and 2200 cm-1 for the alkyne carbon to carbon bond. As far as the Carbon NMR, if you know that a C=O comes in around 180-220 ppm, I think you are safe. More importantly, know the splitting patterns demonstrated from neighboring protons. Regards, Dr Jim Romano NYU
