I' m married. I have 3 kids and a full time job, not to mention a "few" mortages. Non-science major. Pre-reqs taken at night after work. Only about 27 science hours (3.85) and an overall GPA (college and graduate) of 3.56. I just took the DAT Friday and I scored the following:
PAT 19
Bio 17
Org 18
GC 17
RC 18
QR 14 (I know)

Competitive? Non competitive? Go easy on me. I'm an older student with many other added responsibilties and did the best I could with time I had. Although these scores aren't 20's maybe adcoms will see that they are competitive considering my situation? Let me know what you guys think.

I think your GPA is good enough that you have a small chance, but honestly, it's going to be tough. I think they will consider your situation though, and also that your science GPA is excellent. In summary: competitive, but it will be tough competition. Make sure to apply to as many schools as possible (and the appropriate ones as far as average stats and state schools etc), and you should be fine. Good luck.

competitive gpa, average DAT score. would adcoms consider your situation? maybe or maybe not. the whole admissions process is such a crapshoot. Being an older student and your other life experiences may play in your favor and give you an edge over other students. good luck to you.

Because of your family and mortgages, I would imagine that the list of schools you are applying to might be limited due to location. Your best bet is to compare your numbers with the average numbers of their accepted applicants for initial review, and contact those schools directly if you are still uncertain.

Like you, I'm also an older applicant with a full time job, but without the family constraints. If I were you, I'd find a way to spend more time prepping for the DAT, and retake it if you find that your QR score is beneath their cutoff. I spent a little under two months with ~ 3 hours a night after work - my fiance was amazing in her encouragement.

The rest of your application will impress them, but I don't think it can offset a DAT score, especially if a particular school's average is much higher. When you are prepping for your NDBE I while in dental school in a few years, you'll still have your family responsibilities, academic responsibilities, and financial stresses. It's a substantial academic and time taxing undertaking, not unlike DAT preparation. I can't imagine it will get any easier after you are in school, so it's best to show them you can make the sacrifices necessary to succeed in DAT and allow that to foreshadow successes in the future.
