Hey Everyone,

I'm a newbie here and need advice for a prep course. My parents feel that I absolutely need to take a prep course or else I will bomb the DAT. I currently have a summer research position which requires extra reading. Also, I will be taking an English class later in June. Thus, I am going to write the DAT early January after Christmas break.

I just wanted to know whether its worth it for me to sign up for a Princeton review course for this summer ($1000). Do these prep courses have like a schedule for you in terms of readings? I don't know anyone who has taken the course. My parents are telling me that in the 3 hour weekly lectures I will gain insight into how to do better on the DAT exam. Will it be worth it to spend that much money to just attend the classes simply to gain some insight into the DAT as my parents claim while also not doing any readings given by the course?

I don't think prep courses are worth it and the majority of people that I've seen do well (based on SDN breakdowns) do so without any sort of prep course. The only thing that prep course provide is structure. If you can set up your own schedule and stick to it, you'll be fine with prep materials alone.

👍 I concur. I felt that a formal review course was a gross misappropriation of funds. You can always tell your parents you're taking the Chad review course as that is the most useful one as it is.

All of the high-scoring people on SDN did NOT use a prep course. Check the links in my signature. I recommend against them. Use that money for something better, as the courses seem to be pretty useless.

Any insight on how to do well on the DAT can be obtained on SDN. And if it can't, just ask and we'll fill you in dude.

Not that there is a correlation between prep courses and DAT scores but someone I know who took a prep course got horrible scores; some people may get great scores with those courses but people in SDN don't recommend it. Stick with CDP, destroyer, etc and you should be ok.

Hey Guys,

Thanks a lot. I convinced my parents to invest in better prep materials such as the destroyer, CDP, Chad's videos, and all the other resources that I will find as I explore more of this site.

👍 Exactly what id say. If you're bad with self motivation, they're great. If you're good with self motivation, do your research on SDN to find the optimal resources and you can do it for 20% of the cost of one of those courses and get better results. Good luck!
