Has anyone taken a DAT prep course from KAPLAN? Was it helpful or not? I;m not sure if i want to take it because the closest one to me is an hour away and that would be 4 hours of driving a week. I have the KAPLAN book now and am going over it on my own. Perhaps the 4 hours could be spent toward my own studying?

I took the Kaplan prep class. It was definitely helpful because they condense and consolidate everything you need to know for the exam. However, I didn't feel the lectures did anything for me at all. The best thing about Kaplan was the practice exams in every subject. If I had to do it over again I'd do their online class, which gives you access to the same material w/o the lectures.

I'd say if you had the money, take Kaplan.. It couldn't hurt. From what I hear there is more information available to you when you take the class (online or regular) than is available when you buy their book.

The only sections where I felt Kaplan lacked were Bio and the PAT. Some other sources that could be used in addition to Kaplan are TopScore, AcetheDAT(good for PAT) and Barrons. This is by far not a complete list.

Best of luck

The first time I took the DAT, I didn't take Kaplan...studied on my own and didn't do so well. Before I took it the 2nd time, I took the Kaplan review course, and did better. My Kaplan course was an hour away too. But overall I thought it was worth it. I agree with DMD_hopeful...the class was a bit useless, but not completely. At least there was some thing that I was able to get out of it...and to me that was worth it. To be able to get that extra point on the DAT could mean the difference between a 19 and a 20.

The most important thing is the subject tests and practice exams they offered. It doesn't matter how much facts you can store in your brain, if you aren't prepared by the way they ask questions then that can hurt you. So the practice tests/subject tests can do just that.

Again, it's a matter of what you think you need. People do just fine without Kaplan, but there is a nothing to lose....well, a few buck $$. I say use all the resources that are out there because you don't really want to think back and say, I really think that Kaplan course could have helped me. Hope that helps.

If you study hard, Kaplan will help you thrash the DAT. People do well on the DAT without Kaplan's materials, but having them will help you out quite a bit if you put the time in. You just won't find nearly as much material elsewhere in the form of practice tests.

Taking the DAT is more than just memorizing a bunch of material and then regurgitating it. It's also about knowing how to take tests, and the more practice you get on actual test materials, the better. With everything combined, there are at least 10 full-length practice tests at Kaplan.

Doesn't Kaplan have an online option?

I took the prep class and it wasn't worth it for the lectures, however all the practice tests and explanations they have in their training library were really helpful.

I don't think Kaplan's PAT section prepared me enough for the real thing though.
