hello future doctors =)
I've currently graduated with a non-science major and am back in school taking the pre-req's to go to dental school. My question is, if i only intend to take the pre-reqs and only the pre-reqs, phys bio chem and orgo, will that prepare me enough for the DAT??? Or does taking microbio and biochem and such classes give you a much better advantage...

ALSO, obviously it looks better on your application to have taken more than just the required classes, but will it hurt me a lot? or do you guys recommend i take other classes.

Thanks for taking the time and reading my post, i hope to hear from you soon! take care...

Interesting question. I do not feel that micro would help you that much on the DAT. The Bio questions are more application based and there are no specific questions on the actual test that deal with microbiological organisms. As for Biochem. I think that it would be a good idea to take it prior to dental school but it too is not necessary to do well on the DAT.

My advice. Just concentrate on your pre-reqs. Know them inside and out and you will do well on the DAT. A lot of schools are starting to require Biochem prior to starting dental school. So it would be a good idea to add that in the future. But again I do not feel it is needed for the DAT.

Good luck in your studies.

Certain courses make it alot easier such as genetics microbio and biochem however they are not a must. All of the necessary material you should learn in bio class. The chemistry is all in class.

Oranic chem + G chem class will help u a lot in study chemistry part. 🙂 For bio, I am not that sure, because I havenot finish bio yet...😡 it's hard for me to study bio since I am major in chem. Good luck on ur studying!

There is absolutely nothing on the DAT that you SHOULDN'T be covering in your basic bio + o chem + gen chem courses. Of course, your prof won't always get to everything or won't really go into much detail for some topics, especially with bio, and thus the extra bio courses will help you gain a more detailed understanding. I took the DAT with Bio 1+2, Gen Chem 1+2, Anatomy and Physiology, and O Chem 1 + 1/2 of O Chem 2 done and had no problem. You will need to study on your own, of course, but I think detailed studying of the things you specifically need for the DAT is more effective than taking Micro, Genetics, etc. You can focus on yourself and you're needs. Most of the detail in those classes will not be on the DAT.
