Hey there,

I took the DAT today and I was wondering if these scores are considered worthy of entry into dental school. I am coming off of my sophomore year of college with a 3.6 cGPA.

Perceptual Ability - 16 (31.2%)
Quantitative Reasoning - 21 (97.6%)
Reading Comprehension - 19 (67.6%)
Biology - 15 (26.1%)
General Chemistry - 22 (95.2%)
Organic Chemistry - 16 (40.6%)
Total Science - 17 (55.8%)
Academic Average - 19 (85.4%)

Coupled with my 3.6 cGPA, my sGPA is probably around a 3.3-3.4, how are my odds looking when I drop in a dental school application?

Thanks!

Bad...I would say you really don't have much of a chance unless you are URM. Your TS is very low and would be a concern for many dental schools. A retake is needed! Did you use Chad Video's? If not, they are very helpful for gen and organic chemistry.

No worries though, you are just about to be a junior so you have plenty of time to improve on the DAT. Retake in a few months if you feel ready because most of the information is still fresh or wait until your junior year in the summer sometime.

Also, if you haven't already, use Crack PAT to improve on the PAT section.

I would say retake it after your junior year or even senior year, by that time you should have learned all the basic chem, ochem, bio and math. Also, your GPA will get higher if you have taken all your science classes. I also advise you to start doing research if you haven't done it yet.
Good luck

100 % need to retake, maybe you haven't taken all of the classes that will be helpful on the DAT like biochem. Could you give a breakdown about the test and how you studied, that will help others help you.

I didn't use any study materials, I strictly used the practice DAT (the year 2000 version that is publicly posted) to practice.

I was under the impression that my score was alright, judging by the 19 overall, though I was skeptical about the 16 PA and 17 TS myself. The Biology section wasn't anything like what I saw on the practice exam really, it was a ridiculous amount of genetics and development questions that I was unfamiliar with (SEA URCHINS? SERIOUSLY?). I think on the practice I made a 20 or a 19, but I got blown away by it today.

I also did pretty bad in Organic Chemistry overall academically (C+ both semesters I took it) so I might have to plan on retaking one or both of those courses.

Thanks for the responses though so far fellas, appreciate it.

I think you have some good high on some parts, so do not be discouraged! However, I am curious how you have an AA 19, when I averaged yours I kept getting 18?

But nevertheless, great job. If you take it again, I suggest you use an AP biology book like Spark notes or Cliff notes. It's pretty basic but gets the job done when it comes to covering main points. The biology section of the DAT seems to be a lot of memorization.

PAT doesn't count towards your AA. [(21+19+15+22+16)/5 ]= 18.6 = 19
