I thought this would be a good time to post a poll thread to see what SDN users scored on the Dental Admission Test. This would allow us to know where we stand with schools that we are applying for. I myself scored a 21 in Academic Average, 21 in Perceptual Ability, and 24 in Total Science.

Have fun posting poll and remarks! This should be educational to all current and future applicants to dental school.

I like the responses to the poll... Keep it up!

Poll is a good idea people are less likely to lie if they remain anonymous.

However, that being said SDN is going to represent the higher scores so its not a great gauge for overall preformance.

Well, we do know that most people applying to Dental school are constantly checking on SDN to see what people are posting and to get help and answers to questions they have... I expect this poll to reach about 100 by next week Thursday in which this will give us an average percentage of people's DAT scores for this year.

What do you think?

SDN and Predents.com are the most useful tools to get answers to questions most people have when applying to dental school. These two websites have always helped me answer 100% of the questions I have had. I believe most dental applicants know of there existents...

You think about two-thirds of predents score 20 and above (I estimated from poll)?

SDN members do not represent the average applicant.
I think 6% scored 20 or above in year 2007.

in 2008 AA of 21 was 91% (in the month of June), so im guessing at least more than 15-20% would have scored above 20 (considering it's a bell curve and there is more increase in 20 than 21).

17 is the average score (middle of bell curve) of all the people who take DAT exam.
19-20 would be the average of accepted students.

6% scoring over 20 is very underestimated.
but i do agree SDN represents the students who actually research and do all the extra stuff (usually people who achieve higher grades).

You are right. I misread the table. I think it is actually 23%.

Quick check of predents shows:
>/=24: 12
23: 26
22: 29
21: 40
20: 63
19: 58
</=18: 47

I believe the more applicants that vote on the poll, the more accurate our results would be.... Don't you believe that most people applying to dental school are members on SDN? I think so... maybe 5-10 percent that apply to dental school are not members on SDN...

Actually, I think not many ppl know about this thread becoz everyone is not aware of this. I know tons of ppl applying but dont even know what SDN is all about? Its just in my experiences. So Assuming that 95% of ppl of applicants are on SDN is baseless to me.

UCB: Dont you think many ppl may lie on predents? coz if you pull out the percentages of above stats, majority of students are going to compete in higher scores like 21, 22.

I disagree with Bandzharian. I think only a small minority of dental school applicants know about SDN, only the ones that take the time to do the research.

This also correlates to the applicants who want to get into dental school the most, thus we see higher scores.

I would think the porportion of DAT takers that use the SDN is small. Just look at the percentages that are given with the test results. During my test date, a 23AA was the 99.7 percentile. I think I have consistently seen that an AA of 23 or higher is in the 99th percentile for most test dates.

I read somewhere about 13,000 people take the DAT each year (some are retakes). DOC Toothache has some threads with a breakdown of the numbers over the last few years.

As I said before on your other thread, "I would imagine an interactive forum (SDN) is more likely to attract trolls than a little tracker site (predents)." Why are you so suspicious of predents? I would think a pathologic liar would get his "kicks" from reading responses to his posts on SDN, mostly for ego-stroking, rather than at predents where no responses can be elicited. FYI, if you track the scores posted on SDN for all of July (so far):

26:1
25:2
24:2
23:10
22:15
21:20
20:20
19:19
18:5
17:1

For 21 and above, these numbers correlate quite well with the predent numbers. For 20 and lower, predent has a larger number of these listings, which would tell me that the "liars on predents" are doing a very poor job of inflating their scores

I would be careful to read into stats that I find on the internet. Don't get me wrong, SDN and predents are great sites and useful to certain degrees. But I wouldn't base pre-dental facts on just these two sites.

Bottom line: both sites can produce an inflation of scores and probably do. Look through the ADEA official guide if you want to get accurate stats.

No, this poll will never represent all predents. It will only represent SDNers. About 15% so far scored at or above 24...It should be 1 or 2%. Even samples of this size are not this off.
Also, not all SDNers are voting, but that's an entirely new problem.

But a poll like this gives you a good idea of what SDN looks like. If someone wanted to see what the average applicant does, they could look at the ADEA book. This shows you what the average gunner does.

damn there are bunch of smart Mofos on this site! haha

I agree with everybody... especially with armorshell... If it is true that most people applying to dental school do not know about SDN, then these numbers are from those that do research.. The applicants here on SDN are the ones with the most +++ on their dental application. These are the gunners!!

I wonder how many SDN dental applicants there are.. because we already have around 112 votes.. I think it should be more than that...

There are 3500 members with pre-dental status. So that means about 1000-2000 or so are applying now from SDN?
