Hi All,
I took my DAT yesterday and am super happy with how I did. I wanted to post my scores and tell you all what resources I found helpful.
AA: 24
PA: 25
RC: 26
TS: 25
Bio: 28
GC: 24
OC: 24
QR: 19
Since I was working full time while studying for the DAT I decided to spread out my studying over four months. I tried to study about 2-3 hours each day after work then I would do around 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday.
Resources I used
Bio-I was a bio major so I felt strongest in this subject. I used the Princeton Review book to review things I felt week on then used the Destroyer to test myself. The destroyer was great because it covered a lot of the obscure topics that the DAT can get you on in bio. All of the questions I was asked yesterday were in one way or another covered by the destroyer.
GC/OC- Honestly I stink at Gen Chem. I got a a C+ in gen chem in college so I was dreading studying for this topic. I consistently scored 16s on my topscore exams. Finally one weekend I was over scoring badly and just sat in my room and did Destroyer gen chem for 10 hours each day. I would do 1o problems at a time then go over them. If If I got a problem wrong I used one of those colored tabs to mark it and I had to do it the next day. I also used select Chadd's videos to brush up on things I had forgotten. Lastly I used Bootcamp to help me with the timing of the section. The DAT GC and OC are very beatable. After doing a bunch of problems, you start to realize that you get similar problems over and over.
PA-I used Crack That DAT PAT first then switched to bootcamp after hearing that Crack That DAT PAT was too easy. I found both to be helpful.
RC- I did not really study RC. My method was to quickly read the paper and write a single word to describe each paragraph next to a number corresponding with each paragraph. Then I would read the question and use the "map" I made to reference the paper. I think it is a pretty popular method and it worked well for me but I would kind of just do whatever works for you. I used bootcamp to get my practice tests.
QR- Truthfully, I ran out of time and did not really study for QR.
Okay, so the one thing I felt really helped my score was the destroyer. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY THE BOOK. It is the best and it covered everything. Also, every time I posted a question on the forum Nancy or Dr. Romano would answer it within the day. They are both super nice and really want their students to do the best they can on the DAT. The book is such an incredible resource and it is made that much better by the authors of the book taking direct questions!
Also, I found that bootcamp helped a lot also. Definitely worth buying it to help you nail down the timing of the exams. I also really feel as thought the bootcamp questions were very representative of the questions I saw on my test yesterday.
Lastly, I thought that the Chadd's videos were great. Since I bombed college gen chem, I needed to be retaught the material. He is a pretty great teacher and I found his videos to be very helpful. He also has quizzes at the end with video answers that were really great.
I hope this helps!
